My 115 will not start. When I turn the key on the starter will crank good, but no start. Then when I let off the key it hits once or twice, but won't start. Any ideas?

Seems strange that it hits when I let off the key.

Help

Yeah, AJP, that is strange.

Do you think it's possible that your switch is screwed up and is turning off the ignition when you move it to the start position?

See what happens if you jump the solenoid with the key ON, but not in the START position.

Let us know. :)

Re: 1969 Johnson 115 won't start

Have went through the manual testing almost everything. Have 9.2 volts to Pulsepack but no power to the coil. Some of the time when I let off the key, the coil will get a spark. That is the strange part to me, it seems to want to fire when I let off the key. Not every time.

We have tested the selinoid, the starter, bypassed the key, safety ignition unit, ohms through the sensor. Everything looks good. Have good ground, great positive battery cable.

Our next step per the manual is to check the air gap for the sensor. It seems that the pulse pack does not know when to juice the coil and therefore no spark. It may be that the slowing down of the crank when I let off the key lines it up enough to send a spark signal.

If that is ok and it won't start, then the pulse pack may be bad. The pack was bought new in November 2001. Should be OK.

This motor was working fine on Memorial day. Cruising accross the lake at almost full throttle, then it died. Only fired once in an hour of trying. Since then I have only started it once, with starting fluid sprayed into the cylinders. The wierd part is the wanting to start when I let off the key.

Is it possible that I sheared the flywheel key and it is way out of time. Maybe the sensor slipped and lost the timing of when to fire the pulse pack.

Tomorrow we pull the flywheel. Hope we find something.

Any ideas would be appriciated.
