Hey guys I cam across a good deal on a johnson 115 seahorse. I can get it for a really good price but had a few questions:

1. what is the proper oil/fuel mixture for them,
2. what is the proper gear lube?
3. Another queston I have is I noticed there was alot of oil on the motor and pan where the motor sits, what can cause that?

I compression tested it 120psi per cylinder and she fires up and idles/runs nice, if you could help me out it would be most appretiated. thanks in advance guys

#3. This is common to find oil there. When the motor is tilted up some fuel may leak out of the carbs and when the gas evaporates the oil is left behind. Just be certain that you do not have a leak of some sort in your fuel lines under the cowling.

thanks thats good to know, and makes sense I was worried there was a big leak somewhere, but it runs great and compression is good so I don't think a leak is the issue.

50:1 For the fuel mix, 16 oz oil to 6 gallons fuel. Don's ask an old Yankee like me what that is in litres.

If I am not mistaken that motor has electric shift. If so it takes a special gear oil. Even if it is mechanical shift do not use automotive 90w lube, any marine dealer should be able to tell you which lube to use. The right lube is cheap, gears are not :)

thanks guys after asking the owner he put in the wrong gear oil!!! Im worried he might have screwed the gears up, im gonna drain the oil and put in the new oil I hope nothings wrong it goes itno the gears fine so I assume all is well any suggestions on what I should be doing/looking for? as well one more question when the motors in neutral it only spins the prop in the foward direction with a ratching noise kinda like it would if it were in foward but when you put it in foward or reverse when running the prop spins properly i jstu did it quickly while on the muffs to make sure. Could it be because of the wrong oil and if i drain the oil and the new oil will help the gears go fully into neutral or is this normal for this old of an engine
