The impact definitely should of been my first wrench.

I have never had to use heat. The impact works.

Right on James,
No heat was needed to get these screws off. I purchased an impact screwdriver today for $8.00. Sprayed the 2 screws down with penertrating oil and let it sit for 5 minutes. Had my buddy support and hold down the engine body and after 3 whacks on each screw, they broke lose. Aghhhh....I'm so happy but kinda made a big deal over a fairly simple task, lol. I guess I live and learn, will now know for next time.

Only thing now is the assembly I took the screws out (#19 on the weedless chart) wont come lose either. I dont want to damage #19 by banging on it to try and get it off. I think because it is so old and the gasket is proberley fused to it, that it wont come free.

Any suggestions guys?

Pulling it hard doesn't seem to work, lol. I noticed on the side there is a line to match up. Is that for when putting it back on so you know which way it goes?

Really apprecieate the help from all you involved. A bit more guidence would be awesome and really benificial to getting me out on the water this weekend to do some bass fising, lol.

engine patiently waiting to be fixed......

You need to pry out gently it is stuck in there but it will come out. Mine was the same way when I took it a part.

Thanks hidef,

So I was able to pry it out nicely. I used a chisel / pick which I placed on the outer edge and lightly banged it out with a hammer. Now it is out.

I replaced the o ring and put it back together. I figured that while I have this apart that I would also replace the seal #20 on the weedless chart. Is this seal (#20) something that could cause water to enter the oil res?

Also, I'm having a bit of trouble getting #27,28,29, off to replace the # 20 seal. Any suggestions on how to get this off so I am able to replace #20 seal?

Also ordered the water pump seal #11.

Other then these 2 seals I just mentioned, the only other place that water would be able to enter would be from the drain and vent plugs, right?

Thanks for the help

O ring #9 needs replacing.
There is a pin thru 27 that needs to be removed to separate 27 from the shaft. The rest should slide off without removing 27. Could be corrosion.

So as I'm waiting for the seals to arrive, I have been taking everything apart and cleaning it. Everything so far has gone great thanks to you guys and the help you have provided.

I'm still stuck at trying to figure out how to seperate #29 from the shaft. I have tried lubricating it and pulling it off with vise grips but it won't budge. It looks like it is "fused" to #28, I think from corision?

Any suggestions on how to seperate #29 from #28 and and the shaft?

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Soak in release oil and tap gently with a soft rubber face mallet. Will take some time.

So do you mean submerge the whole assembley #19 in release oil?

After I soak it for a while, I don't see how tapping on it gently with a rubber mallet would seperate #28?

Could you perhaps elaborate on your method to seperate #28 from the shaft on the weedless drive?

Thanks James and others for your time,

Why are you trying to take the prop apart? 28 and 29 are part of the prop and there is no reason to take it apart.

Hidef,
thanks for coming to my SOS call, lol.

My goal is to replace the seal (#20). I have a bit of water leaking into my oil res. I already replaced the o ring (#9) and the vent and drain plug seals. Still got water coming in. Only other seals are #20 and number #11. the water pump seal (#11) will go in fine but my problem is this,

In order to get to the #20 seal, I must first remove #27-30 which is attached to #8 which runs through #19. Hope that makes sense. If not write back, pm me, Whatever. I just am really stumped.

Thanks for your help

So 27 to 29 is stuck to the prop shaft. They need to slide back to clear number 9 which is the pin that actually drives the the prop. I wish I could help you have you tried soaking it with BP blaster or some other penetrating oil and take your time trying to free it up.

Yes hidef,
I have it soaking now but the copper cap #29 won't detach. It is basically fused to #28. I tried twisting it off with vise grips, but absolutely no movement.

Should I resort to cutting or grinding it off? Will this damage anything else?

Before you start damaging stuff see if you can get replacement parts. Some of which are hard to come by. 29 and 28 are part of the prop after 1974 I don't know if they normally come in your prop or not if you can get a replacement prop that might get you a better idea.

SUCCESS.....

well I got the cap off and the whole assembley apart. Had a mix up at the local marine shop. They gave me the wrong seals for what I needed and were not much of help after that. The water pump seal fitted into the prop seal and the prop seal was way too small. Now I gotta find another water pump seal. anyone have a good website for old boat parts?

once I put this all back together I will report on my findings.

thaks for the help
