1969 Johnson 55 need help

I recently purchased a boat, with a trailer and a 1969 Johnson 55 HP motor (model # 55ESL69A) It is a 3 cylender motor. I am looking for 1. what are the correct plugs to use for it, 2. what should the proper gap be? The motor does run but it skips and doesn't run evenly ...I was told the motor hadn't been used in a few years, but when I went to see the boat it started right up. I am also looking for the best available manual for repairs (should I need to do them) for this motor...any suggestions? Thanks

No doubt about it the only repair manual to invest in is the factory one that the dealers used. Reprints are at outboardbooks.com. Use L77JC4 or QL77JC4 plugs gapped at .030. That was not the original specs--if you have the original surface gap plugs, trash them.

That motor has breaker points under the flywheel. And an anti-reverse ring that prevents it from running backwards. You need the book. Don't ignore the plug wires either.

also be aware it is an electric shift. use only Premium blend type C lower unit oil, only available at a dealer.
