1969 johnson 55hp shift is backwords

hi i have a 1969 johnson 55hp outbord motor with the hydro electric shift.
the problem im having is when i push the control box leaver forward to go forwad the motor gos in revers and when i go to put it in reverse it gos forward. it probly wouldnt bug me to much but i dont get full throtel because reverse is forward and the leaver dosnt go down all the way.
and it was like that when i bought it so im not really shure what some one eles has done to it. maybe its wierd back words or some thing. hope you guy got some ideas on what it is or what i need to buy to make it right. im new to boating so not that knowalgeabel but im mechanicly inclind. thanks in advanced

Sounds to me like like you have some wires crossed or somebody put the wrong switch in the control box. I'm sure somebody else will chime in here with more info.
