Re: 1969 Mariner V bow removal question...

Thank you so much for the clarification of the wood. I am good with wood just not up to date on any of the modern stuff my dad was a builder and when I was a kid there was indoor and outdoor ply and chipboard that was about it...lol

Gluvit or Coat-it which is better? or the best for the money?

Does anyone know where I can buy a factory service manual on that outboard? no dealerships carry it anymore and all I can find are the chilton, haynes, clymer type manuals that cover a variety of motors.

thank you again everyone for taking the time to share the knowledge.

Gluvit v. CoatIt, some guys like one over the other but both are great. CoatIt is a bit cheaper though.

eBay is a great spot to grab the factory service manuals. You ought to find one in the 35 - 45 buck range:cool:

And if you need manuals, there's also a retired merc man on my local craigslist that sells em for 30 bucks. I'll post up the link when I see it (It's been posted all summer, now I can't find it go figure).

1982 mercury 45hp quicksilver manual?

A quick search didn't list a 45hp in 1982...

Do you know the serial#?

Maybe a 40hp?

it is a 40hp sn#6142461

Looks like a 1982 2cyl, from here @Iboats

Parts diagrams
can be helpful

Try to find a factory service manual, possibly from the CL Merc guy posted above, they're much more helpful (some say accurate) then the aftermarket Seloc/Clymer manuals.

THANK YOU FOR THE PARTS GUIDE LINK!!!!

I spoke to mike at the CL add above and he said he sold that book pretty quick.... he said he started with over 275 books and is down to 15 or 16 left... he owned and operated sea-ray, starcraft and other brand dealerships for years... but he has sold the dealerships and retired. Super nice guy though.... So I am still on the look-out.... he told me ebay was the best option... and starcraft is still his favorite brand of boat...

He gave me lots of information about my little engine, he said my 1982 quicksilver though rated as a 40hp would be more like 50hp of today, he said they changed the way they did the power ratings, after this one was built and they started rating the hp off of the power head and not at the prop like mine. so this should have 40hp at the prop and more like 50hp to 55hp at the power head so today it would be rated as a 50 to 55hp not a 40hp...

Iboats should carry quite a few parts & pieces to fit your 1982 as well. The parts diagrams help w/ part #'s & any #'s that change.

I think the CL Merc manual guy has that prop vs crank rating backwards. I don't remember exactly when the rating change took place, but it was in the early to mid 80's, and different makers adopted the 'new' standard prop rating across different model years.

OB's WERE rated at the crank before the mid 80's, and NOW they're rated at the prop.

So an early 80's 40hp crank rated OB could be more equivalent to a late 80's 35hp +/- prop rated OB. Where your 1982 Quicksilver falls, I don't know.

If it moves the boat & gets you where you want to go, I'd run it. For most of us, the prop vs crank rating won't amount to much of a difference, IMHO.

If you move up to a 4stroke instead of a 2stroke, a new 40hp 4stroke will likely weigh more then your 1982 40hp. So that might be a factor to consider, but it might not be enough additional weight to be of concern.

It worked out perfectly... I did not find the manual but i did make a connection with a guy who is a boat engineer and a corporate rep, and owned several dealerships for several boat manufactures since 1950's... he said he turns 74 later this year.... He has four planes and asked if I would do his 100 hour inspections and line out his annuals for him since his A&P passed away earlier this year and I am still licensed with the FAA and can place his planes back in service... So all in all it worked out great....

Re: 1969 Mariner V bow removal question...

jbcurt00 I messed that up.... you are correct about the prop crank ratings.... What he was explaining to me was when my boat was rated for a 45hp in 1969 on the boat tag, the 1982 40hp mercury will make more power than the original 45hp's in 1969.... So it should be like a 1969 50hp to 55hp, on my boat... if this makes sense??? he said the 45hp's in 1969 would have probably been down graded to 35hp to 40hp.... or did I mess that up as well???? lol

either way you are correct if it goes and goes well then I do not care about the hp rating, I just wanna go fishing..... lol

what are the advantages of a 4 stroke vs a 2 stroke on a boat? I know the advantages and dis advantages on a motorcycle etc.... but not on outboards??? this little guys is not oil injected it is pre-mix....

what are the advantages of a 4 stroke vs a 2 stroke on a boat?

basically similar to those on a bike. cept for latest n greatest DFI 2 strokes, 2 strokes use more fuel and are noisier/dirtier but generally weigh less, have greater midrange launch and less maintenance to do. 4 sttokes will troll at idle better and on less fuel, and are legal to use some places where 2 strokes aren't (like water supply reservoirs in some states)

Perfect thank you,
Wish someone made a big single cylinder 4-stroke, like the klr650 it would be perfect light weight and yet decent performance. and would make about 50hp like the klr650..... one can wish...lol
