Hi Guys:
I have the opportunity to buy a 1969 18' runabout with the original 292 inline 6 coupled to the original MCM Model II drive in good but non-running condition. I am very familiar with the 250 inline 6 having rebuilt 2 of them and I have always hankered for the larger 292 but until now I was unaware that it only came with the Model II drive which exhausts through the hull and intakes raw water through the hull also. I see the parts are no longer available so the question is:
Is anyone familiar with these drives and are they robust and repairable? Any comments would be welcome.
Many thanks: Kilowatts.

Robust ......... NO
Repairable ............. Yes If you can repair it without parts.
Most are NLA
That drive was last made in 69. LOOOOOOOONG gone.

Thanks for your very prompt response, Don. Do you know if I can attach the 292 to a 165 drive? Or is this just a vain hope?

You would have to replace EVERYTHING but the engine. Transom shield and all.

Many thanks Don, I think I'll pass on the opportunity.

Much as I'd like to have the biggest inline on the lake I don't really want to have the biggest problem on the lake to go with it!

Avoid 60's IO's completly. Doesn't matter who the manufacturer is. Parts are few and far between. The 60's is when they were first invented, not perfected.

Thanks for your advice Don. I've already advised the vendor that I won't be proceeding with a deal.

Best Regards:
