1969 merc 1000 lower unit

I have a 1969 merc 1000 serial #2863175 inline 6 with a cracked lower unit case that has been welded. While replacing the impeller I noticed that all the lube has leaked out, what was left resembled chocolate milk. I have another gear case so I was thinking of changing the gear set to it, is this a difficult job? I do Have manual but not an oem manual. Option 2 Can anyone tell me what other lower units will fit? Year and hp ? Have parts to trade maybe if someone has one. Thanks In advance

Just click the SEARCH tab up above and type in lower unit. A bunch of threads regarding the topic will come up. In general most lower units from 66' to late 70's fit no problem. I think anything from the 85hp to 150hp range. Just have to do a few minor things to prep them for fitment. I have a thread in regards to the same topic.
