Re: 1969 Merc 110 Spark Issue

A few observations,

The neon flash tube spark testers a good, up to a point, however, they flash at too low a voltage and will not put sufficient load on an ignition system to be a reliable indicator of ignition health. You CAN'T beat any of the open air gap testers. period.

Maxx, Laddies has forgotten more than either of us may ever learn. Learn patience and listen, you can learn a lot more.

To the OP, after cleaning all the corrosion to restore good contact, maybe paint a couple coats of Rustoleum Restorer over the finished work to stop any further rust and keep you system going another 50 years or more.

Glad you found the problem, I thought it was going to be the plastic insulators on the points wires arcing across, common problem on those old ones, weak spark.

Re: 1969 Merc 110 Spark Issue

This motor is NOT CDI - there is not switchbox.

It is NOT the Phasemaker ignition with maker points.

CDI and Phasemaker both have coils mounted OUTSIDE of the flywheel on the block. As you can see in the photos - there are no visible coils!

This is a simple magneto ignition - basic points, coils, condensers. The only wires that typically have issues on these mags is the shorting switch wires.

The points must be SPOTLESS and gapped at .018". Condensers on the Phelon magnetos can be troublesome. New ones are available. The coils USUALLY are good if they're not cracked or otherwise visibly damaged. New points are available.

Thanks Chimewalker I stand corrected. I was thinking it was a 1970 motor, and did not look at the photos posted.
It is as you stated.
Gald you got it to running Ru Rusty2.

Not to worry OM We all are distracted tierd and sometimes we make posts that are not nesecarilly totally correct and thats why we have others to help us see our mistakes not condem us for them and thats why Laddies is IGNORED for being an arogant egotistical whatever That has been handled too by me. So lets just all move on. Yes Like I said before editing bad grounds (REMOVING Bad staments as I will not be pulled into a web ) Not for disinformation. CARRY ON FELLOWS. Cheers. It takes a special kind of person to admit his wrongs. There was no hrm done over a spark test and the information given was enough for the initial poster to come to the conclusions he did on top of the rederect created by a BONEHEAD. Your advise was well observed and taken into consideration by the man looking at his engine and may or may not have helped him make his decisions on what he read and what he sees. Therfore You have no appology to make other than to clear a simple mistake we all could have or did make. JMO. Next time use a timing light to test for spark. It,s Quick Its easy and It,s gaurenteed

Best way is to simply refill with fresh oil and run it. No need to flush it, unless you suspect an issue.

You can use some desial fuel and pump it into the lower fill intel and turn the motor over but not start, disconect the plug wires should do the trick. after turning it over by hand in gear a few times, drain the LU and leave it set for an hour so all the fuel will drain out, then refill with good LU grease. This should get most all the inside of the LU clean and dont forget to check the old gear oil and the desial for metal shavings that would indacte bad parts. JMO
