A few observations,
The neon flash tube spark testers a good, up to a point, however, they flash at too low a voltage and will not put sufficient load on an ignition system to be a reliable indicator of ignition health. You CAN'T beat any of the open air gap testers. period.
Maxx, Laddies has forgotten more than either of us may ever learn. Learn patience and listen, you can learn a lot more.
To the OP, after cleaning all the corrosion to restore good contact, maybe paint a couple coats of Rustoleum Restorer over the finished work to stop any further rust and keep you system going another 50 years or more.
Glad you found the problem, I thought it was going to be the plastic insulators on the points wires arcing across, common problem on those old ones, weak spark.
