1969 merc 350 lower unit......HELP

Im having probles removing the lower unit prop shaft in order to inspect and replace all the seals. I have successfully removed the prop(with alot of heat and cutting tool!!!). Removed the cover nut by drilling two sections. Now the darn bearing carrier will not come out. So here is my questions..... <br />First, Im using a seloc manual for guidance. Is this lower unit a type "b"? <br />Second, is the bearing carrier threaded? The manual tells you to heat the lower unit and strike at same time in attempt to seperate the carrier from unit. However, the manual does not mention the key I see at the bottom of the carrier. Does this key mean it is threaded in?<br />Finally, a picture in the manual shows a shaft puller adapter and slide hammer to remove the bearing carrier. If it is not threaded on,does the shaft slide out when you remove the bearing carrier?<br />I really appreciate any assistance in solving my problem. I have been working off and on with this motor for two years. LOL Had it in the water once and I am determined to get it there again.

Find "John's Old Mercury" board and re-post there if you can't get a difinitive answer here. There is a guy there who does up lower units for the little fours as a hobby. He's friendly - and very good, and has all the little tools for all those little lowers still out there.<br /><br />-W

Hi Clams,<br /> The '69 350 is a twin - uses the same unit as the 500.<br /> As for removing the carrier, clamp the propshaft in wooden blocks in a vice. Heat up the outside of the housing around the area where you can see the other end of the carrier inside the housing. Using a wooden mallet or hard rubber hammer, tap the back of the skeg to draw the propshaft out. I find that if the unit is horizontal, with the skeg away from you, and the driveshaft resting against your hip, a gentle lean into the driveshaft while tapping the skeg will pull it out evenly. PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench may help.<br /><br />Good luck!<br />- Scott

the simple removal method for a mercury is to remove the carrier nut and hardware place two flat peices of steel between the housing and a old prop replace the prop washer and nut thighten the prop nut and it will pull the carrier, its worked for me for 40 years--bob
