1969 merc 40 4hp lower unit

hi everyone,

i have a 1969 mercury merc 40 4hp and the motor runs but doesnt pump any water. im trying to remove the lower unit. how do i remove it. does the power head need to come off.

any help is helpful.

First put it in forward, then remove all the bolts, one under the trim tab and nudge the bottom from the top. Empty oil first out of the gears

hi everyone,

i got the two nuts off and got the shift unit in forward and the lower unit oil out of gearcase but still wont come off it dropped a 1/8" but that it no more.

No need to disconnect the shift linkage, as long as the gear is in forward. At this point, having succeeded in getting separation, squirting with corrosion dissolvers would help let it sit for awhile and then use some friendly persuaders like a rubber mallet.
I'm assuming you operate in saltwater
