Hey all!

First post here. Looking for some advice on this old merc that I bought last month. Runs great until it comes up to temp. Bogs down and dies. Will restart when you pull again, but ends up dying. The whole harness has been re-wired. Not a fuel issue. Now believe it is a bad coil. I'm having trouble finding the part. When you search my serial number (26xxxx range), you find the coils here https://www.crowleymarine.com/parts/4603.cfm . This is not the correct coil and unfortunately I shelled out $300 on a set that will not fit. I have found another post detailing somebody in a similar predicament that remains unresolved https://forums.iboats.com/threads/replace-coil-on-1968-merc-110-9-8hp.452212/ . The correct coil (pictured below) is part number 398-2568. I have not been able to find the part in stock. If anybody has a recommendation of where else I can look, I would really appreciate it, but I have scoured the internet and found nothing. Engine serial number is 26119716

Question...
Is it possible to make another coil fit? Is it possible to rebuild a shoddy coil? I would really like to make this work because I have almost $1000 invested in it. Thanks for the help!

There is a few places that I may call for some older parts and current ones:
Vintage Outboard: https://www.vintageoutboard.com/
Twin City Outboard: https://www.twincityoutboard.com/
OldMercs: https://www.oldmercs.com/

Welcome... I'd love to check out this motor and diagnose with you. Kinda sounds like a timing issue. Points set correctly? .18-19" Condensers new? I seen coils throw erratic spark when warmed up. Sometimes these motors are like a dog chasing it's tail.

Thanks for your reply!

For a number of reasons, I'm pretty sure that it is the coil. It dies quickly no matter the throttle position. Its not puttering out, it just dies. I can also hear one cylinder still trying to fire after the engine starts dying. New condensers, wiring harness, and carb cleaning still produces the same result. Thanks for the recommendations, I will give them a call. I also found some Johnson/Evinrude parts that look like they will fit directly onto the bracket in the Merc. Not sure if anybody has experience using those parts interchangeably. https://www.ebay.com/itm/282805385415?epid=24012904915&hash=item41d883b8c7:g:qrEAAOSw7rdaV0Wl
