I'm at my wits end. I have a mercury that is getting the best of me. Its nearly impossible to start when cold. I also have the service manual.

I have replaced all the gaskets in the carb - cleaned - etc.. My problem is that when you apply full choke it appears that the carb is being flooded. It get so much fuel that it leaks out of the carb intake.

I have just ordered a new inlet need/seat and gasket kit. Am i safe to assume that i prolly have a float adjustment and/or bad inlet needle? I really appreciate any feedback.

I wanna go Fishing

Or a bad fuel pump or plugged idle tube or your "start" setting on the tiller slipped. Does it run well after you DO get it started?

Once started it runs like a dream. Makes good power. If full choked and pull the rope it gets a whole lotta fuel in the venturi. So much that it leaks out the intake. I got it to crank a couple of times with the motor in FWD and almost full power. I know that once its started (warm) it starts on the first pull.

float adjustment? new seat? I suspect the fuel pump is good, though i haven't tested it yet like the manual calls for testing it.

Thanks for the help!!

My 67 sqirts a lot of gas in when the choke is closed too...but it starts easy when cold. When it is warmed up and running good, idle it down all the way whith the tiller...then, turn the tiller to "start"..does it pick up quite a few rpms? If you have the manual, look at adjusting this..sometimes it slips out of adjustment and the throttle is too low to keep it going. Good luck

Could anyone recommend other things that i should look for? If indeed i'm not getting too much fuel and it still won't start what else could be a factor? These little carbs are touchy lol

viva la mercury.

A new float, seat and needle won't hurt anything..adjusting the float setting on these is a bit of a bear. I had about the same thing on mine where the only way it would run was full throttle in fwd and it just barely would run..got a new in box fuel pump off ebay and it fixed the whole shmear....the idle screw had to be out almost two turns also instead of the one turn out the manual says to do. Make sure you have the top of the float chamber on the corect way too because it has a vent hole that needs to be in the right position.
