1969 Mercury 1000 100HP Outboard.
Runs perfect in neutral and at high end, but when you shift it in gear it wants to bog down and die. Have 118 pounds + or - a few pounds in all cylinders. Have had the carbs cleaned out and it improved alot but still wants to die below 1000 RPM any and all help would be great

Thanks
Garry

Re: 1969 Mercury Runs in neutral and perfect top end but dies at idle in gear

Before I cleaned the carbs it was idleing at around 1400. After I cleaned them it went upto around 2700. So I adjusted it and got it back down to around 1200 and the it starts to cut out and miss really bad. So I started to unpluge 1 plug wire at a time and listened for a change in the moter. All of them changed but #1 and the sputer went away and thats when I notice when I shut it off is was making a hissing sound in the #1 cylinder. Upon further investigation I noticed when ever it sputered in nuetral it was having a mist on the outside starboard side of the #1 cylinder so I think I need to start with a head gasket.

If any one has any sugestions please please please let me know. I don't want to change the head gasket if I don't have to.

Well, seeing as there is no head on that motor, you won't find a gasket for it. Do a link & sync (search the forum for it) and get your idle down below 1k.
