1970 40h.p. johnson runs on choke only HELP!!

MY 40h.p. johnson will not run without the ckoke on.All it will do is idle and that is still with the choke on. Anybody got any ideas?

Hi, JRieck.<br /><br />You clearly have a fuel problem. Most likely is a gummed up or otherwise plugged carburetor. <br /><br />Other possibilities are plugged vent on tank, tank pickup, air leaks in fuel line and failed fuel pump.<br /><br />Good luck.

you neen to remove and clean your carbs. while you have them off get a rebuild kit. your idle screw and needle valve probably are covered with a white or green crust. also check tank vent is open and make shure you have no holes or cracks in the fuel hose. also if you left old gas in during storage check the internals of the fuel pump.

I tried all those things.<br /><br />>cleaned & rebuild carb<br />>new fuel tank & hoses<br />>fuel pump is ok<br />>no air leaks<br />>still running on choke only??<br /><br />sorry about the mix up with my 2nd post, i'm new to this site.<br />Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

How is your Spark? What do the plugs look like? If you give it gas, does it die? Just trying to eliminate some things

Did you replace the fuel connector? As they will sometimes leak air inward.<br /><br />You sure you got all the jets removed and thougholy cleared of debris? View through them or probe them lightly with a wire and compressed air.

Howdy J.Rieck.<br /><br />What have you done to ensure that the fuel pump is okay?<br /><br />I think you would agree that something is preventing fuel from getting into the crankcase in adequate quantities to get off of idle.<br /><br />Disconnect the fuel line from the pump to the carb. Turn her over and see what it will squirt into a plastic bottle. I suggest an old Windex bottle. Check the content of the bottle for water.<br /><br />If the pump squirts a teaspoon or so for each revolution, reconnect, start her up and see if she will accelerate with extra fuel sprayed into the carb throat.<br /><br />Let us know what you find.

Pump works fine. <br />Pleanty of fuel comes out when it is turned <br />over. <br />Yes, does accelerate when fuel is sprayed into<br />the carburator throat. <br />Did also replace fuel connector.<br />Smoke's like h*** when fuel is sprayed into <br />carburator. <br />Any more idea's PLEASE!!<br />Need to be catching the big cat's this weekend!!<br />Thanks <br />j.rieck

Your carb is still not working properly.<br /><br />You have proved that fuel is coming out of the pump and you have proved that the carb is not putting it into the crankcase.<br /><br />Could be float setting problem, could be clogged jet. Run a wire through it.<br /><br />Good luck.

Cleaned out the carb again, guess what? the old girl purrs like a kitten. i found a jet on the bottom of the carb. bowl,behind a plug. it was plugged tight with gunk. i didn't even know it was there till i looked a little closer at the paper that came with the rebuild kit!!!<br /><br />thanks to all for your help, couldn't have done it without you.<br /><br />looks like i'll be fishing this weekend!!! yeeeeehaaaaaaa!!!!<br /><br />remember- if the fish ain't biting at least you got away from the wife.
