Hello!
Thank you all for the advice (I do a lot of lurking and searching).
I have a question about a recently acquired motor and water impeller replacement. I have a 1970 40 HP Lark Selectric shift...
I have repaired the wiring, the shift solenoids, cleaned the carb, ordered a manual (still waiting), and done a number of other tune up/cleaning items.
I had the motor running in a barrel and it was not pumping any water...so I ordered an impeller (from iboats). I am impatient and did not want to wait until the week to replace my impeller... I understand how to remove the exhaust housing and the lower unit (generally), do I need to worry about disconnecting any part of the shift mechanism or any other areas of major concern?
Also as I understand it, this LU uses type C / ATF (in a pinch) can anyone verify this?
Thank you so much for your time and help!

????????????????What do you mean when you said you replaced the shift solenoids??? It doesn't have any shift solenoids. That makes me wonder what you know about removing the lower unit. There isn't any "shift mechanism" to disconnect. However, you DO have to disconnect the electric cable going down to the lower unit. First, remove the rear cover from the midsection (whole bunch of screws). Then you will see the electric cable. Disconnect it at the top end, and remove the clamp. Then remove the diamond shaped cover off the side of the other midsection cover, and feed the cable out it. Now, remove the two bolts from the oval plate inside that area, and pull it off the cable. Tie a string or something onto the end of the cable to help pull it back in place when reinstalling the unit. NOW, you are ready to unbolt and remove the lower unit. If it has a long shaft extension, unbolt the lower unit from the extension, leaving the extension attached to the motor.

????shift solenoids????

Sorry, meant shift switches in the control box, and did not state that i had replaced them only repaired them, specifically the wiring in a few spots.
Thank you for the detailed info on the cable and how not to lose it. Thank you FR
