Hi Folks,

Does anyone know how to get to the water pump on a 1970 4hp lightwin evinrude, it's got no tranny, you start it, it goes, no reverse, just turn the engine around. I got the 4 bolts out of the foot, was able to lower it about 3/8 inch and that's it, looks like something is locking it in place. I don't want to force it too much in case i break something, i tried lightly with 2 pry bars one on each side and it didn't work.

Can someone help me?

Thanks

Shop2.evinride.com has your parts. or, Iboats should have it too. wait untill you get it apart to order anything.

make sure all your bolts are out that holds it in. the drive shaft and the water-pickup tube should be all thats holding it in.

Uh-huh, and let that be a warning to anybody else working on their motor. The last guy left the 10 cent o-ring off the top end of the drive shaft. That let water get into the drive splines in the crankshaft, causing them to rust. Eventually, they will completly rust away and you will be sitting dead in the water.

You may or may not have a salvageable motor. All for a little o-ring.

Go ahead and force it off, then pull the powerhead and deal with the shaft and see if you still have a crankshaft.

You might try wedging it open and spraying a good quality penetrating oil on the shaft letting it run down to the power head (let the motor sit upside down). You are right to use two pry bars to keep the pull as close to center as possible. You have nothing to loose by letting the oil work for a week giving it a few more shots every day. If it isn't too bad it might loosen it up. I would even try bolting it back together and running it for a while at the end to help loosen it up. By running it it will torque the splines a bit. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks guys,

Much appreciated! I seriously thought there was some kind of a lock near the base of the motor that I couldn't see.
