back again......this time w/ a '70 4hp md#40063......how do you tell if she's pumping enough water, because it could be a pump problem or a blockage problem...

The water pump impeller is available here at iboats. The water pump housing is PN 0310344 and is still available.

The engine will spit water out of the 8 relief ports but you won't see a steady stream. Also you want to run 24:1 in that engine. The book will tell you 50:1 but there is no needle bearings in it.

Your local dealer should have the impeller for that engine my dealer stocks it.

ran it in a lrg pail w/ prop off...water spritzes out of those hole but i don't know if it is of sufficient volume.....head was getting too hot to touch.....is there a method of cleaning the water passages in the cooling system including the block & head ??

sorta a Bump.......Motor started right up after a 15 mo. lay up.....still shows signs of lower cylinder getti'n hot......any thing that can be put into the water jacket spaces to dissolve salt build up......also how can you gauge how well the water pump is working ???

Re: 1970 4hp evinrude runni'n hot

best way ive found to test a pump on those motors is to remove the lower unit , place it in a bucket of water level with the pump, but not over the discharge, put some tape on the ds splines, then spin it with a drill ( be sure of correct rotation), and also beware, if you are using a drill with a cord, water should squirt quite well from the pump. you may even want to attach a short piece of hose to the pump discharge, and keep the end of the hose at roughly the same height as the top of the powerhead....and pointed away from you and anything powered by line voltage.

[edit]....i was assuming that the pump had already been replaced , and the motor still was running hot. put a pump in it !!!

Your model must be 4006E. Pull the lower unit and inspect impeller. If it has taken a 'set' and veins stay curled over, replace it. Also, fit a hose to the bottom of water tube while lower unit is off and blow through. Should be able to blow through tube.. there will be resistance, but you should be able to blow through if all is normal. If you cannot blow through, then you likely have a blockage at the top of that watertube, or in the powerhead cooling passages. You can try ramming weed wacker line up the tube to clear, if no-go, remove powerhead at top of exhaust housing and inspect. Here's a schematic: Evinrude Lower Unit Group Parts for 1970 4hp 4006E Outboard Motor

Good luck!

blaster not working ,so i tried NWCOVE"S advice and ran the lower unit in a bucket w/ a drill to turn the shaft....it pumped water all the way up a clear hose and shot out a stream ,but not real strong.....is there a way to tell if this is enough to cool the motor ?? have no idea about the difference in RPM's w/ the drill vs. a running motor...

Re: 1970 4hp evinrude runni'n hot

Those 4hp models tend to run a little on the hotter side - the passages in the head don't really flow much water and the exhaust cover only has water running along the edge on two sides. They may seem hot, but the pistons are generally fine. When they do clog up, in the ones I've seen it is usually in the horizontal passage on the top of the cylinder block. .

Re: 1970 4hp evinrude runni'n hot

thanks to all who gave advice [esp. NWCove]...........showed the water flow to a local outboard mechanic. with the lower unit in the bucket,he noticed a strong flow coming out from under the pump cover.....found out the machine screw was bottoming out and not pulling the cover down tight...put some washers on and tightened it down and WALLA...like a cow ------ on a flat rock......we will now try it on the motor...thanks again..........but with my luck w/ outboards, i'll be back.
