Working on a 1970 Johnson 70hp. When you turn the key nothing happens... I hooked a remote start to the soleniod.... battery positive and to the yellow and red wire.... would not turn over.... Then I bipassed the soleniod... 12v on soleniod right to the starter.... spun over but very slow.... took the spark pluggs out and tired it again, this time a spun over like a champ... no problems.... So the soleniod is bad..... but why is the engine turning over so slow with the plugs in?????? Something mechanical???? Spun sleeve? Or a huge draw somewhere. I checked the battery its fine. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks.

Hey,
Did the solenoid click? Batttery connections ok..?clean and tight. A starter solenoid takes a small current from the key swith to engergize a heavy current from the battery to the starter. You can probe for power using a test light on the yellow/red wire. Just get someone to turn the key. Also the wire to the starter. Might have a main fuse blown or the big red bullet connector itself could have something wrong if nothing happens,if the choke or nothibg works. Could possibly have a bad starter if the battery is fine.

Troubleshooting starter circuits is in the Engine FAQS forum, hero. "Outboard wont start".

Good luck and let us know what you find. :)
