Re: 1970 85 Rude

Thank ya. Anything out of the ordinary for this year/hp motor that I should expect to find? Or just the typical things...I expect I will be his primary mechanic/restorer, which I don't mind, because his mechanical knowhow is a little weak. It will actaully be fun to spend someone elses money to get a boat floating. :D

Re: 1970 85 Rude

I have a 70 115... There alot alike as with most v-4's. Lot's of interchangable parts from Hp. Although check to make sure they will work, there are some differences.
LU is the major difference. LU uses special lube...Type c or premium.. USE ONLY THIS FLUID!! I have only found it at a dealer. The electric shifts are nice but kinda a pain. Parts are hard to find and pricey. If water gets in oil or the level is low the LU will not work properly. Foward is the default gear and nuetral and reverse only will work with it running. If you have no nuetral or reverse check the oil... I would change it to make sure it's right.
There easy to work on... I go out on the lake with three wrenches 1/2 7/16 and 9/16 and a standard screwdriver is bout all you need.

All in all there easy to work on. I like the electric shift, but it can be a pain.

I would let him know you need a manual. Helped me out bunches. I don't suggest Clymer for this... there pretty vague.

I would have to agree.... when it's someone elses money it's worth fixin right... :)

I have a used timer base for that HP. Came with a bunch of used parts I got on-line... If ya want it let me know. Pay the shipping it's yours. Never hurts to have some parts layin around

Re: 1970 85 Rude

Thanks for the info Dave!

I have a 71 60hp Johnson myself, so I'm familiar with the hyrdoelectric shift. I have the clymer manual that covers both mine and his engine and am not real impressed with it but it works. Do you have the Seleoc (SP?) or the OEM manual? I do know parts are high. The shift switch in mine was busted when I bought it and tried to find a replacement but it was going to run me around $80  so I rigged some auto relays to create the proper logic for shifting and maunally shift gears.

Whats the timer base you describe? I'm sure he would pay me back if it would be useful to him. Send me an email if you don't mind.

Thanks
karrick_hutchinson@yahoo.com
