Hi folks,<br /> I have a 1970 85hp Johnson which was running well last year. Last fall I replaced the water pump housing and impeller. This year the motor is boardering on overheat at full throttle. Also noticed that the water exiting the exhaust relief vents at full throttle is not as "hose like" as in years past. It sputters and sprays, could be steam & water or could be exhaust & water I don't know. I dropped the lower unit and inspected the water pump and impeller and both seemed to be installed correctly and in decent shape.<br /><br />I suspect the thermostat is not operating correctly and the factory service manual and the Clymer manual do not go into too much detail on diagnosis and correction of the problem.<br /><br />So now for the questions:<br />1) Can the thermostat be serviced without pulling off the power head (offset screwdriver perhaps?)<br /><br />2) Is it possible to pull the hoses off the thermostat (that go to the block), hook them up to the garden hose to see if there is a blockage in the cooling system?<br /><br />3) Any other likely culprets or things to check?<br /><br />Thanks in advance,<br />Mike
