1970 Evinrude 115 Carb question

Now, I'll get this out of the way so you all can thrash me with wet noodles and give me some answers;
I rebuilt a set of carbs myself, having never worked on a motor before, but the carbs I rebuilt were 1978 evinrude 85HP and I installed them on this monster. I realize now the error of my ways but I was wondering:

1) what's the worst that could happen running it with these carbs?

2) I've read people talking about "setting the idle jets", do I do this by using a screwdriver to turn the jets out or ???

The motor will run but it likes to idle a little rough; haven't had a chance to take it on the water yet.

Before the yelling commences I have 2 more rebuild kits coming and I DO have a service manual in the mail.

1. Well since I haven't tried it, how about some generic answers? If the venturi size is smaller, you could lose some horsepower. If the jetting is wrong, it may run to rich or too lean...which brings up the "worst that can happen". Too lean can cause severe engine damage.

2. Yes---if it even HAS adjustable idle needles. Again, I haven't looked.

I haven't yelled. Why, did you hear something?

EDIT: Ok, I looked. It doesn't have adjustable needles. Nothing to adjust.

Just to be a pain again
The original carbs have a needle assembly sticking through the front but I seem to remember someone more intelligent than myself mentioning they should be pulled and plugs put in instead because the linkage never sets up properly once apart.
Is my memory serving me right on this or have I been taking too many pills?
