Re: 1970 Evinrude 115 HP Loses spark-gains spark etc..

I added a new thread indicating I solved my problem with the help of others a while ago with this issue. I'll add an update here so people know what happened. This motor came with an ignition safety switch located to the right of the rectifier. This was also bypassed with a 2 inch jumper wire connecting terminal 7 with terminal 9. I replaced several hundred dollars in parts to no avail. I decided to remove the safety switch because if it was bypassed what good is it really? Well, when I removed it, I did not move the pulse pack wire over to the purple power wire. So no matter what I did I never had power into the pack. Looking at my manual at about midnight I realized that I didn't think I had power going to the pack. So I went out to the garage and moved the pack wire from terminal 7 to 9 and sure %$&$ she fired right up and has ever since. So at that moment, I came to the conclusion that that 2 inch jumper wire was shorting out intermittently when the motor would vibrate. It took me to the end to diagnosis this because I did remove and inspect this wire before reconnecting it way back at the beginning. Good news is, have all new electrical components and have become well acquainted with this type of motor and how it works. I guess $600 for new electrical parts and a course in outboard repair wasn't too bad of a deal. So if anybody needs a used stator or a new pulse pack let me know. I have extra:redface:

I have a problem... Can anyone tell me if A 1970 115 hp Johnson is compatible with a 1973? To make a long story short I boat a boat at an estate sell for $90. I actually bought the seats and they thru in the boat and trailer. The guy that bought it never put it in the water (Since 2001) AND IT HAS SET BESIDE HIS GARAGE. The motor keeps blowing a fuse when I lift the toggle switch to engage the choke. I can get any fire to the coil. Someone took off the safety Switch box. Is there a way I can test the power pack? The originally owner said when he sold it... it ran great.
I've replaced the sylinod (Spelling bad) and the Rectifier (Yellow wires bare and the read wire was in two pieces and no rubber coating over the wire. I found a 1973 motor for parts ($100) and if it is compatible I would take a chance with seeing if I could get it running that way instead of spinning 600 to 700 dollars on parts.
Thanks Ken:eek:

well, you can use the iboats to check for parts. You can check numbers to see if they show up for both years.

just remove it. move the pack wire from terminal 7 to terminal 9. send me a photo of your terminal wiring(specifically the ignition switch area).

you have two wires coming from the pack to the terminals. one connects to your ignition coil. typically if the pack is new this is the blue wire. the other wire connects to the purple power. if things are wired right once your remove that worthless switch you move that pack wire over to terminal nine.

is your switch bypassed now with a jumper wire connecting terminal 7 and 9?

do you still have that goofy linkage that connects the 4 idle mixture screws? It looks like the letter H attaching all 4 screws to each other. If so, get the red retainers and you can throw that linkage away because the screws won't move.
