This is a new engine to me, it fired up , idles runs good, BUT where does this motor spit out the cooling water???? the only place i see it comming out is out the transom.....theres like 2 holes right behind where the impeller housing would be ,,' its spitting the water toward the back of the boat" thats the only place the water is coming out , it is a strait solid stream like it could be correct, but ive never seen displacement of water there on any otboard ive ever owned and im concerned , im guessingthe impeller is bad, but i dont see ant other place where the water would diplace. there is a dichare half way up the transom "on the side if u wre looking at the back of the motor or boat...... that is spitting water and air ""Very Very little water""", im guessing exhaust,???? but i thought exhaust comes out underwater above the prop???? Need help & need to know what im dealing with.... Thanks guys!!

You should have a hole on the back of the leg (midsection-facing rearward) that is called an exhaust relief. Water and some exhaust will exit there. It will not be a steady stream. Your engine does not have a telltale like most modern engines do.

While it is running, feel the upper cylinder head with your fingers. Caution: it will be warm but it should not burn you in three seconds. It's going to be about 125 to 140 degrees.

Since the engine is new to you, I would replace the impeller anyway. They're availble here on iboats.

dono I believe you have some of your terminology mixed up. The transom is the rear wall of the boat. DJ gave excellent advice, I would listen to it. Good luck.

Yes, there is an outlet, on the leg, between the cavitation plate and the bottom of the powerhead. That is the exhaust relief.

I still would replace the impeller. Check the head while running.

This motor is a little older than yours, but your's should do the same as far as water out the exhaust....
Hope this helps, and you have a really fine motor....one I'd like to have!
Good luck,

Sounds like that's your problem, need a new impeller. On such a fine engine, I would be very careful to look at my water pump housing as well and to tell you the truth, I might consider buying a whole new water pump kit (housing and all) to be sure if I saw ANY sign of wear on the steel inserts in the top and bottom of the housing. Check that--I'd just get a whole new housing and all and not worry about it. If your fins are broken off your impeller when you check it, try to be very careful to locate all the broken pieces. Don't be too disappointed if it doesn't run well at the lake, like Samott told me once---they all run good in a barrel. That motor can be tuned up to run like new most likely if it isn't right now and pretty darned cheaply, too. GREAT motor!!!

JBJ had it right. There should be water coming out of it like in his photos. Also, did you touch the head when it was running? It should be warm but not hot to the touch. Water should not sizzle when splashed on it.

I'd replace the pump or impeller and then test again. That's a nice engine I'd like to have one also!

The spray at a fast idle on your 25 should look like this:

Re: 1970 Evinrude 25hp just purchased!! I have problems...

YES -- Your engine is behaving normally. The exhaust relief ports allow a small amount of water and exhaust to exit the engine above the water line at idle because of the exhaust back pressure when motionless. At speed, the water and exhaust exit through the prop. The only thing different about your engine is it does not have the tell-tale stream newer engines have. If you see a fine mist of water from the relief ports the engine is fine. The recommendation to change the water pump impeller is for preventive reasons. Anytime you buy a used engine it is a good idea to replace the impeller since you have no idea when it was done last.

Actually, I don't believe the 1970 exits through the prop, that came in later years.

I bet everyone has one of those for their test stands! If not they surely need one!
