Well I always thought I was mechanically inclined, but yet another event stumped me today and I'm hoping someone can help me out....thank you to all who can....

I have a 9.5 sportwin (think its a 1970, but I know 64-72 are similar so it doesnt really matter), and I cant seem to get the very bottom off. It has 6 bolts on the underside, but not able to get the unit off to inspect the gears, etc. due to some problems a friend of mine said it had. What is the correct method to remove this?? The part Im referring to is the very bottom of the motor which houses the gears behind the prop. I took all 6 bolts off and the last bolt on the keel. Seems to be stuck (or is it still secured by other bolts??)

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Is the lower 1/2 stuck tight, or did you get that loose but can not drop it off the upper?

(1) Many of these older units may have been worked on before & will have a lot of Permetex between the upper/lower & will need some perswasion to unstick it. You may try to rap the prop shaft with a rwhide/brass mallet a bit to help pop the lower loose.

(2) If you got the lower loose, but it is hung, on those you need to remove the shifting yoke pivot screw in the lower so things will drop off.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your mtr. Look for part # 52 in the g/c section. Remove the lower bolt and the g/c should come off. Don't remove the pivot pin untill you get the g/c off for inspection. You'll have to drop the l/u down to get at it.

My apologies for the delay in my reply. Its not the entire lower unit which I have an issue with, but rather the 6 screws holding the bottom keel and prop shaft in place. Here is a picture of what I was talking about. Sorry I dont have the correct names for the parts...the screws are located right above the drain/fill screw with 3 on each side. I removed all of them, but the section doesnt come lose. Not sure what step or steps I am missing to remove it.

Look at the site below.
Remove the 6 screws (#22) and the skeg should come loose. As stated before, it is probably held on with some type of sealer from a previous repair, might have to tap it a little to break it loose.
Once you get it loose you will have to remove the pivot pin,(#23), to get it completely off.

+1. Patience, a rubber mallet and a bit of heat should help get it off.

You did get the phillips head screw out of the side of the skeg right? That controls the lower shift lever. If the 6 screws and that side screw is removed, then yeah pound on the skeg with a mallet (obviously not too hard) but many times it takes a decent whack to get that seperated.

Excellent. Thank you very much. I definitely didnt want to use too much force and break anything. All the visible screws were removed, so it must be some sealant and lack of previous maintenance....will try again when the rain stops.

Thanks again!
