Is everyone just using marine laminating resin? Is the VE really worth it? Any real world experience? Pros, Cons?

Ve is the "Super" new stuff for poly. As I understand it has a very good price point,{vs. epoxy} flexibility and stronger than poly. Only draw back if it's even an issue id shelf life. There are a million
posts lately about the product.

Do I need to put strips of neoprene or vinyl under the fuel tank? What is this for? Is it just to eliminate wear on the tank. I plan on putting in a new Moeller marine poly tank.

For aluminum tanks it acts as a buffer for chemical reactions against the aluminum sealed or not to the hull. Like if you were to simply place an aluminum tank flat on a surface and in addition it allows some air to move around. Moeller tanks being plastic have a whole different install vs. aluminum. Personally I'm gonna probably go with the moeler tank and they sell a kit in addition to the tank for installation. Also they have a spec for there underfloor tank install.
You will hear a 1000000000's pros and cons here about which way to go. Aluminum vs.Moeller. If moeller makes a tank to fit your space and the gal capacity you want IMHO I would go that way.
LOL wait to hear all the feed back...
I've seen guys here go "oh theres plastic under the tank, i'll just a a pc of something and use it."...wrongooo. But that's just me. And it's not an insulator or sound buffer. neoprene strips are the only way to place an aluminum tank on any flat surface, sealed or not. IMHO.
Call Moeller for or research specifics to your tank selection.

Don't tell anyone but....
Something just crossed my mind... So far in this forum which I've been lucky enough to have found. In the last 3 years I never ever heard of anyone having to repair or replace a plastic gas tank. It's always been aluminum, steel, fiberglass...all the tests, preps to install etc...So many failed aluminum tanks for whatever reasons.
I know you can't repair a plastic tank once it does fail/have an issue but really... not one comment in regards to unhappy or whatever for persons with or replacing plastic tanks.

Thanks kcassells!!! Aluminum isn't an option for me, too expensive. Moeller makes a 50 gallon that I can make a coffin for, where I want it. Its the 32550 model. I plan to make a coffin that doubles as the seat area. This way, if theres any problems, the top comes off, and the tank comes right out. I had a 36 gal tempo tank previously, but wanted more capacity to run farther to another island near ours. I'm also replacing the previous tank location with a in deck fish box. I didn't see anything on the moeller site stating that there needs to be anything under the tank, I guess I should call them.

Kinaiahi,
What size tank {gals} came out of the boat belly. And whay are the dimensions? Just wondering. You may be able to fit a larger tank in.

the tank that came out wasn't original. It was a tempo 36 gallon. that's why I want to put a 50 gallon tank in. I can't use the old one because I'm totally changing the setup of the boat. A large fish box is going where the tank used to be.

do you guys think that I need to bolt the extension to the new transom, or just a tab it in with 6 an 12 inch 1708 and it should be good?

Try later to get more pics. But it's the extension in previous photos . I hurt my foot and won't be doing much for the next week. Might have torn a tendon. Dr wants me on crutches for a week.

If you look on post 1 you'll see the extension that the PO built and hung the outboards on. its the only ply that's on the back now besides the top of the transom. It was bolted before. Probably best to just tab, and bolt.

No Title

Finally got something done. First I needed to resurrect the tent, and try and straighten some pipes. We had some strong wind that bent the front poles, so I dropped it down so it wouldn't fly away. Then I took some wood that I had lying around and made a fiberglass roll holder, work bench, and a landing to walk up into the boat. I was on the foot all day yesterday, and it was ok. Took off from work to go see the specialist (podiatrist) this morning to be told do a couple exercises and come back in 2 weeks. The Dr. was standing in for the regular Dr. who was on vacation. Well thanks for waisting my time, vacation, and money. Don't you love those Dr. visits. Should be ordering the supplies soon. The lumber yard sold all the marine ply that they had so now I'm waiting on their shipment to come in. Should be here in about 1.5 weeks. Oh yah, got the fuel tank in, 50 gallon Moeller. Little more capacity then the old 36 gallons.

Don't waste your money or time on marine grade ply. Over-rated. Get acx, bcx exterior grade, cut it seal it. Done. BTW you prob. shouldn't be jumping in and out of the boat yet or you'll end up like a broken complaining ole man like wog/wood. I like the steps for the 1 legged rehabber. Maybe keep them there when you land that next big tuna.
Whats up with that tent? it looks great. Why is it blowing around?
I want all the info you can post on the tank.

Tent is a 10x20 from Costco. We had a high pressure system that brought some rain and wind, to the tune of 50 mph, and over a hundred on slopes of Mauna Kea on the Big island of Hawaii. My wife called me up freaking out because everything was blowing around, so I left work to tend to matters. A gust must of caught it right, because it bent two of the end poles over. If you look in the pic at the back corner you'll notice the pipe isn't straight. I've used marine ply in the past and it was a lot lighter than regular ply. The exterior ply that we get here on the island is usually wet, twisted, etc. The marine ply has no voids, dry, straight and light. Do the voids make that much of a difference? I figured I'm in this deep whats a couple hundred more for better material.
