I have a 1970 (ish) Surf Tamer. A friend of mine acquired it and decided he didn't want the hastle and gave it to me. I am young and ready to put my Carpentry skills into work and restore this boat as it is my first one and quite excited...

It orginally had a 1970 Johnson 40 HP on the back but the leg was taken apart and in much more need of repair than I could give it. So I waited and watched online and finally jumped on a 1980 Johnson 65 HP motor. I am in the process of replacing the transom as it was fully rotten and didn't want to jeopardize the new to me motor. So I began the going backwards farther and farther.

I have taken off the whole top fiberglass piece and cut out the fiberglass from the inside revealing the rotten wood from the inside. Took that out completely tipped the boat up for 2 weeks and completely let all the water drain out and yes I realize that the foam soaked up water under and the wood under the fiberglass floor is probably rotten as well but my budget drawing the line had to stop somewhere. Laminated 3 pieces of pressure treated plywood together and fitted it to replace the existing rotten transom.

Sanded down the existing paint to bare fiberglass 12 inches back from transom. Fiber glass blanket and resin have slowly worked up from 3", 5", 8" strips to reinforce and strengthen it. And finally put on last big piece to fully cover wood. Sand it down so its smooth and in the process right now of bondo and smoothing out so patches and holes I needed to patch on the back outside part of the transom now as well.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-----> I am getting close to painting stage and have been recommended to use Endura Paint (2 part epoxy paint). I have been emailing there website and have been told that if my boat has enamel paint that it will not bond and will actually eat it away I don't know if my boat has enamel paint and wondering if anyone has a clue. Or can recommend to me a paint that I can use. I live in Saskatchewan Canada NAPA and Ackland are two places that I know supply paint but wondering if I need to be dealing elsewhere. Just need to be pointed yet again in the right direction. Sorry no pictures at the moment can if needed. <-------- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much.

Welcome to I boats, cool boat!! There are several guys that are the local experts, woodonglass, archbuilder, GT1000000 and friscoboater to name a few. I would highly recommend reading their threads before you get to far into tear down. I have learned a tremendous amount from this site and these guys. Good Luck on your boat!!!

Also get yorself a free photobucket account, load your pix in that, then copy the the "IMG" link, paste it straight into your comment, and it will load nice big pix......I say ts because it helps everyone help you, and if there are no pix, it did not happen. No matter how good the story is!!!!

Uhmmm, if in fact the stringers and bulkheads under the deck are rotten then the hull of your boat will NOT be structurally sound and will be unsafe. the waves and wakes beating on the hull will cause the hull to flex and could cause it to crack and break open causing a catastrophic failure. I know this sounds like I'm being an Alarmist but...these are the facts. It might not happen now or in this season but the possibility IS there. I totally understand the lack of funds and the desire to get on the water, but...If you are going to err, it's always best to err on the side of safety. That's my opinion. It's your boat and you're free to do as you see fit. Just please always have your Personal Fotation Vests on and all of your pasengers as well!!!;)
