Hi everyone. First time post here, take it easy on me! lol.

I just purchased a 1988 Larson Citation 150BR for cheap. Boat has a 1970 Johnson 60HP model# 60ESL70B. The guy I bought it from said he takes it out a few times in the summer and has a blast. Said the motor runs, and he also gave me a complete parts motor to go with it, including prop.

I started the motor at his place and also at home a few times before my first voyage. (yes, i used muffs). I am the kind of person to do some research on the mechanics of things before I use them. I want to know how it works incase something goes wrong.

I got the boat in the water at the launch and had a tough time starting it. Someone came over with starter fluid and it fired up. It was running great after that on Saturday. Only had it out for about an hour. Parked it at the dock overnight and came back on Sunday. Boat started right up on the turn of the key. I let it warm up for a bit at the dock, then I got in it and started to head out of the channel to the lake. The motor started to run rough and didnt seem to be running on all cylinders. When I would give it gas, it was chugging and not getting the boat on plane as it did the day before. I turned it back towards the channel, and the motor came back to life. I would give full throttle and the boat would get on plane, however, when throttling up to full, I could feel and hear the motor slightly struggling (not running smooth), then would go full throttle when the gas was applied. At full throttle, motor seemed to be running good.

Next issue, I was coming into the no wake zone and was coming up on some boats. I tried to pull the boat into neutral to slow down, and the motor would not come out of Forward. I tried to play with the control and get it to slip back into neutral or even reverse, but had no luck, I had to turn the boat around and take it back to the dock. Not sure what the issue is, the guy I bought it from said I need to adjust the linkage, but I think this motor has the Hydro electric shift. I think my initial starting issue was because the motor was not in Neutral. Trying to start cold in gear....= hard start.

Last issue,
I got the boat home, and noticed that there is a crack in the bullet on the lower end. Looks like it was not winterized correctly. My neighbor came over who knows a little about the motors of this era, and said it looked like an older crack, but was sure that there was probably no lower end oil in the case. I tamped the 2 inch slit closed again and put some type c Lower end oil in. did not leak out.... at least while the motor was in my driveway and not running. I do have a spare lower end unit though!

BTW: What kind of oil is lower end oil? Can I get it at an automotive store?

Thanks,
Rookie Boater, Jon

Yes, you have an hydro-electric shift lower unit, no shift linkage to adjust. The first thing you want to do is pressureize the lower unit and see if you have a crack or not. If it is cracked, you will have to completely disassemble it and have it repaired, could be expensive. You might want to think if you want to invest that kind of money in it.

Lower unit oil for you motor is indeed Type c - or as they now call it "special blend". If the motor engages you in forward gear and you can not go into neutral, that is a safety mechanism, and something is wrong. Theoretically, the boat stays in the forward gear, so you could still get back to shore.

Make sure you are not leaking gear lube, and I would change the drain screw. If it is original the plastic washers on it will deteriorate.

I do have a spare lower end unit in my garage that the guy gave me with the boat. However, my neighbor said that I might as well change the water pump out as well, since they tend to go bad, and the seals and thermostat.

If the water pump is good, you can just change the impaler.

I wonder if I can get the small crack "welded" shut? Do you think it would work? Might be a cheap fix!

I guess I could give it a try, since it would be a scrap piece anyway if it doesnt!

-Reading further, I see the two blue and green wires going down to the lower end, I will test the voltage to see if when I shift it into Neutral, if the green wire gets any power.
