I have a 1970 Johnson 2 stroke 6hp with a few problems...
Problem #1: The shift lever sometimes seems disengaged, and the lever freely moves way past the normal forward / reverse positions. After moving it back and forth multiple times, it will finally engage in gear. I am not sure what the linkage looks like, but it seems to me like it would either work or not work at all, not work intermittently.
Problem #2: the tiller handle rotates all the way to “Fast”, but won’t rotate all the way to “Stop”, only somewhere between “Slow” and “Shift”, even though it will stop the motor. I’ve read that the markings aren’t always correctly lined up, but this seems like it’s limited rotation, and the gears are meshed correctly.
Any ideas?
