Hello,
I have a Johnson 9.5 model 9R70C. The starter rope won't retract. I have been all over this site and found that several other people have had the same problem. I have also seen different ways to fix this, but I have to admit that i am a little confused. I tried to rewind the spring by turning the screw in the top counter clock wise. The screw twisted down into the sleeve about an inch and stayed down. Does this mean the spring isn't broken? (still won't retract) After doing this I noticed that the pin that the starter gear rides on is missing. Can I replace this with a regular roll pin? As you can tell I don't have a lot of experience with these motors. There is a used recoil starter on Ebay. Should I buy it or do you think mine is still in good shape? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Barry

Re: 1970 Johnson 9.5 recoil starter

Hi Barry
The first thing that popped in my mind after reading this was the cold weather.

If it's cold(like below 32) things like this often act up, get tight, and don't want to rewind like the should.

You shoul be OK subing a roll pin found at your local hardware store for your missing one.
I would not order parts until you can see what is going on with yours. Take it all apart and clean it up very good. Remove all grease and look at it.

You be amazed at what just cleaning up old parts can do for your eyes trying to figure out what is going on.

If you don't see any damaged or defective parts wind that booger up the specified number of times(someone may chime in here with the spec) and see what happens.

Re: 1970 Johnson 9.5 recoil starter

Thanks for the help outboardnut. I took your advise and disassembled the starter to clean it. Not real happy with what I found. The spring and the rod that runs thru the spring are both broken. So it looks like I'm in the market for a good used starter or the parts to fix this one. If anyone out there has one laying around, let me know how much you want for it.
Thanks again for the help.

The new units part number 383122 or superseding 384604 are very pricey as are the parts. You might be better off contacting the salvage yards where you may get a limited warranty.

Whatever you get, don't follow the service manual on the rewind or you can break them again.

Re: 1970 Johnson 9.5 recoil starter

Thanks for the info ezeke. They have one on ebay, but I'm not sure it will work. It came off of a 1973 Evinrude model 9322B. Do you know if it will work by chance? What is a good price for a used functional recoil starter? I'll check the salvage yards you recomended also.

Thanks again

The one off the 9322B will work if it is good; that's a # 384604 if it is original to that motor. If you can buy it right it might be worth the risk of finding a bad spring.

Tim's outboard probably has it, and prices are always :)

Just have the model number of your motor, and exactly what parts are broken.

Note that there are two bushings (one fairly small) that contribute to EZ rotation of the items that need to move. The spring can't be bent nor can the aluminum shaft's end be bugger'd up, it needs to go down into the center of the spring while allowing the center part of the spring to tension up.

Thanks again for all of the help. I didn't get the one on ebay. So it looks like I'll be calling all of these suggested places today. I'm on the hunt, so wish me luck.

thanks again
