My buddy has a 1970 or 71 model 50hp o/b that is having shifting problems.. It shifts into forward and neutral ok but when you shif it in reverse it goes forward(the addition to that story goes in the SHT section later) What can cause this or is it just the electric shift in the bottom section need replaced

My best advice for you is to acquire a manual for the motor. IT sounds like possibly a switch issue. Power should be sent to certain wires depending on which direction you are going in. Check that and if the switch in the controls is working right, then you've got a lower end problem.

Because that unit defaults to forward gear when no power is applied to the wires(Blue/Green), it sounds like you are losing 12 volts to the reverse wire when you shift and thereby it automatically goes into forward.
