Ed pull the rear caps off the corners on top of the transom and then the piece that runs across the top of the transom and last but not least either bend of cut off just enough of the top cap to expose the top of the transom on the top corners . Then make sure theres no bolts of rivets in it and it should pull out ( maybe not easy but it will pull out ) :D.

I think I know this boat. Is this the same boat that was for sale in Eaton along 35 earlier this summer? I stopped and looked at it because I really like Starcraft Starchiefs, Islanders and Chieftains. You are braver than me, good luck. I hope it turns out well. I live over in New Paris.

Any hints on removing the old soft transom in mostly one piece so it can be used as a pattern?
I just removed mine yesterday. I posted pictures but I don't know if they would help or not as I don't know Starcraft very well.

Welcome Ed,

Looks like a great start. I'm with you on the motor. I'd work it all out first and then deal with the cosmetics. I've got one like you and Bret. I'm not sure the exact year model, but i'm getting the motor worked out first. Keep pics coming. I'm kinda new myself, but will share what i discover.

The motor soounds like it will run once i clean the carbs. I am told that these motors had a problem keeping the stators working. once i get it to idel i can check that out. i found a local source for marine plywood but they are asking $89 a 4X8 sheet. Sonce this is aluminum hull and the wood transum does not come into pro;longed contact with the water i can use any good quality ply and simply water proof it, which is my plan.

Ed,

I think most, if not all of us have used a-c exposure 1 exterior plywood, that is what was oem, so if it lasted 42 years and they didn't even encapsulate it then, it will oultlast us if done properly
