A couple of weeks ago I found an old glastron. I like old things. So like a moth to the flame I had to go look. Turns out it was a 1970 Glastron V-180 Fundeck with a matching 1970 85 hp Evinrude outboard. The boat and transom are sound. The engine seems to have been winterized before it was parked in 2002.

Front and rear hatch covers have been replaced by painted marine plywood. Gelcoat is faded. Needs some (not bad) reupholstry work (my wife's department). I'm still trying to dechipher the wiring and extra switches added to the dashboard (bad job). If it ever had a key switch, I'd like to know where it was located. I'm not sure about the outboard control and throttle box yet (working or not).

I'm searching for anything I can find on this boat. So far the internet hasn't been much help except a few pictures. Anyone having an owner's manuel or information as to the hatch covers (plywood, cedar, teak, fiberglass, or what). Also a manuel on a 1970 Evinrude V4 outboard. Can a trim kit be added to this old motor?

I think I may also decide to add some guages. But if I do I'm looking for vintage (working) glastron or evinrude guages. Speedo and amp or volt. Also probably a fuel guage, because I think I'm going to replace the plastic under deck tank with an aluminium one with a sending unit. Key switch too?

I cannot find much on this rare old girl, so any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated.

We'd love to see some pictures. Sounds like an unusual boat. A 1970 Evinrude 85 is a good motor but it is electric shift. Parts for the lower unit and the control box are no longer available from any new source although most of what you'd need for the powerhead probably are. Good luck with it. Welcome to iboats!

Thanks for the welcome. I will post pictures this weekend or asap. So if there ends up being a problem in the box or lower unit what then...another motor? What I know about outboards is they mount on the transom. Yea, I'm not familiar with outboards. Also I have located a trim kit for a 1976 85hp V4, will that fit on my motor?

It should. They changed the style of the units in 1978. A '76 model should fit. However, those older models typically go for big $$$ though.

Thanks systemf that is about the only pictures that can be found online. I'm going to try and post a pic of the boat. May not work though.

Ok I think I have it now. This is the condition I bought the boat in. The front has a small ding repaired but not painted. The rest is as you see it. I will post other pics of the storage hatches later.

Man - Glastron had some wicked cool boats though the 60-70's - if I had the guts to do a glass boat I would look for a Glastron - they had the courage to be different back then. Now all glass boats pretty much look exactly the same!

Cool Boat!!!

The transom is very sound. The deck is sound but I haven't pulled the carpet yet to see any hidden problems. I'm going to try polishing out the hull to see if the faded look will disappear. Any suggestions? I'm brand new at restoring a boat. Anyone know any "OLD" Glastron dealers that I might talk to about this old girl? Have some questions about some things I like to ask anyone who might be familiar with a V180 Fundeck.

A guy on my lake has one of these things. Always wondered what it was. Cool boat.

justbrad, you need to check out the classicglastrons.com forum for additional info. There might be some Glastron resources in Austin since they is where they came from, but it is my understanding that manufacturing was moved out of state so that might not help.

Wow,

What a cool boat! Never seen one like this! Reminds me of the older Viking deck boats!

Much fun to be had on that deck!

Re: 1970 V180 Glastron Fundeck Restoration Project

system-f I signed on at the classic glastron site before I came here. Thanks for the link though. No one there has even seen one of these boats. I've even emailed Glastron but without any response as of yet. :(

But although frustrating, I am becomming even more excited about having found this old girl.

Please everyone keep your ears open, I would love to talk to anyone who knows anything about these boats. Even if you know an old Glastron dealer I could talk to.

Thanks

Very cool boat!!

Very unique and fun looking. I'm jealous.

However, The motor...

I'd be very careful about putting much money into that electric shift.

Looks like its rated up to 130HP.

If the boat is as solid as you say you may want to consider repowering.

Some may disagree.:), However my experience with those old electric shifts is limited. My buddy had one, Old and as stated earlier expensive, problematic, outdated.

Best of luck to you.

Re: 1970 V180 Glastron Fundeck Restoration Project

Yes I've already been told if it runs to use it but parts for the lower end and control box are not available any longer. :( So I have been keeping my eye out getting some feel for what re-powering it will cost.

Thanks for the advice.

I do hope you got to enjoy taking your Fundeck out over the summer!

I know I'm going to date myself but I remember a friend of the family had Fundeck when I was a kid. I've been keeping my eyes open for one for years.... Just so I could have a blast from my past to play with. I'm really suprised they only built them three years.

I have one exactly like yours, except it has a 1970 Johnson 115hp motor. It too has an electric shift. Works fine. Pretty simple. I live in Oklahoma and the Fundeck is the best fishing boat I have ever owned. Great for jugline fishing, trolling, or drift fishing. Just alot of fun becaause of the space. Plenty of room to "walk" around. I have no carpet on mine, easier to clean. The boat to me is priceless.
