I've been doing a lot of research on this site. I'm trying to add an electric start to my motor and was wondering about the starter motor bracket. My engine already has a bracket from what I can tell I have an Outboard Motor Starter and Silencer Bracket Port this is the exact picture I see on ebay:

Do I need a different looking bracket to actually hold a starter motor, like this:

Yes you will. Brackets from 1959 till 1976 should work fine on yours.

You betcha. In the "Top Secret File" you'll find a list of salvage yards that will help you out. Good motors too and very reliable.

I haven't seen a generator set up for the 18's. I don't believe they ever made one.

I don't believe it's setup to recharge the battery but I don't really no how old the deep cycle is on it. From the boat I just bought it still says 12v on my meter. Not too concerned about keeping it charged as I wont be running my lights a lot. The old lady would kill me if I was out past dark fishing anyways. Plus I've got more chargers, battery tenders than carters got liver pills.

I was wondering if this starter would work too: Presto2 brand, mgd-4002-12v, w5 found on my local craigslist. Its already connected to a mount but it doesn't look like the one in my picture.

I've got a bracket that I think would work for you. It's off of a '73 Evinrude 25hp. Let me know if you're still looking for one.

Awe man :( I just bought one on ebay for $79 These old parts are almost worth their weight in gold. Luckily I just picked up a set of simplex controls, cables and all from my local craigslist for 20 smackers.

What kind of starter am I looking for if anyone knows? Just found out the motor is a 1973 18 hp fastwin model 8305 I think. Is it a 10 tooth? or a starter model number would be great too. I've found them ranging from 50-150 but don't know which one to pic.

Ouch... I was going to sell it for less! I'm not sure about the starter... you could look up the starter at www.shop.evinrude.com to see what years might be compatible. I didn't get a starter with my parts motor - just the bracket. I can't complain though because I got the motor for free!

I'm not seeing a starter listed for either model of 18hp. do ya think a starter from the 20 or 25 horse would work.. The fly wheel has teeth on it like it would accept a starter? My only question would be how many teeth does the starter have to have on it?

I found this link which might be very helpful for you...
Starter Kit Diagram

The way I read the parts diagram is that this starter "kit" was designed to be interchangeable with 18hp, 20hp, and 25hp Johnson/Evinrudes. This next link shows some years that the starter "kit" will interchange with -

http://www.**********/parts/detail/omc/O-0171845.html

For some reason, I can't add the link without the funky asterisks showing up. Replace the asterisks with boats dot net to get the link to work.
Between these two links, you should be able to get the oem part numbers for the starter and other associated parts, which will help with your EBAY search. I've got a 1971 25hp and a 1975 25hp electric start motor at home, and I can check them to see how many teeth the starters have...

Both of my 25hp motors have this starter - Prestolite MDO-4102M which has 11 teeth on it.

Hope that helps some...
