1970s 9.5 HP Evinrude no Air Filter?

Just bought a used old 9.5 HP Evinrude. Fired right up, but there is not airfilter. Just a open carb with choke rod.
Is this normal?

I have a 72 evinrude and a 72 johnson both 9.5s. Neither one has an air filter. This is normal.

Doesn't need an air filter. There's not much dust on the lake. However, they did have a "chunk stopper" plastic screen to keep you from dropping something down the hole.

I don't know of any Johny/Rudes that came with an air filter. Maybe some of the injected models do, but none of the carb models did. Some came with an airbox, which was basically a kind of velocity stack. No air filter though.
