Lookin' real good J!

Thanks Jig.

8 more holes to install. 4 for the splashwell and 4 OB mounting holes. So really all the pieces are installed together - transom plate, transom cap, cmc and splashwell. I may have a little problem since the transom brackets need to be riveted and I need a longer grip range. Ideally I'd like to install the rivets with room to work. But we'll see how it goes. Maybe nothing to worry about. :)

Have a great weekend folks!

Got the rivets installed using longer grip range using a dab of 5200 on the heads. Brackets feel real solid. :)

Next up is to install splashwell, transom cap, transom plate with cmc. Hope to get at things this weekend.

Oh yeah, need to bore the splashwell holes in the transom skin too.

Have a good one folks.

Re: 1970's 16 ft Aluminum Mackenzie Runabout Rebuild

Well got all the pieces installed. Something like this >>>

- drilled 1" holes in transom skin for splashwell holes
- installed splashwell using 1/4" x 2.5" carriage bolts and 5200
- installed transom cap and plate (had to use longer bolts 1/2" X 4") using 5200
- installed cmc

Exhausted now. Took a hole bunch longer than I expected. (kinda - LA boat never surprises me)

But feeling good transom is finally installed. I know she's real solid and hope there's no leaks.

Have to prepare for lake launch and final check for leaks. Fingers crossed! :)

Happy

:)

Used the flange tool for both splashwell drain holes. Starboard side went a little better than port side. The hole on the port side is located pretty much at the bottom of the splashwell. Of course this made it impossible to use the washer. Anyway both drains are installed and I am pleased with the results.

Drain hole from outside view.

Ready for cmc

Followed the directions in the cmc manual and connected positive and negative terminals to a 12 volt battery charger. Just enough juice to raise the cmc to get at the ob mounting bolts.

cmc installed

The splashwell was installed first. Proved to be somewhat tricky lining up all the holes otherwise installed ok. Used 5200 on all holes.

Splashwell installed

Have some work to do with the transom cap. I need to have two pieces made up for starboard and port sides. I think I will use cardboard for a template. I have the original pieces but the shapes are slightly different now.

Next up is to get the foam installed. I should have the majority of foam - various pieces. Going to wait for dry weather ...

Have a good one folks! :)

Thanks PMC.

Looking ahead to foam ... I have a bunch of pool noodles ready to go and some other pieces to fill gaps. But does the foam need to be glued to the hull? Other threads I've looked at don't appear to use adhesive.

And I understand I need to leave a channel for water to drain but is there anything else that I need to consider? Thanks in advance.

As long as your flotation material is trapped within the structure and not free to float away on its own, it should do the job. I think I'd be concerned about rattles and noise from bottles, if they're not glued in place. It seems to me that noodles wouldn't make noise but there are a lot of voids with both methods. The maximum flotation can be achieved with pour-in foam, but there's a lot of discussion about water absorption with various types. I used rigid construction foam, cut carefully to avoid any voids. The only parts that I glued in place were some blocks under the stern deck. I haven't had any problems with squeaks either, but nothing is actually wedged in place. - Grandad

Thanks GD.

My plan is to lay noodles on the bottom and cover them with styrofoam sheets. We'll see how much foam I manage to squeeze under the deck.

Have a good one! :)

Hey J,

Looking great! I found a couple of noodles this year at the cottage became totally water logged after only one summer's use.... so if possible, it may be best to try to keep those from the center section of the hull.... put some solid foam board in there with a drainage channel. Up front is likely fine as well... really if you got enough water up front, you've prolly got other issues to contend with! :)

Like the cnc install --- at least what I can see in the pics so far!!

Keep up the good work man!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Thanks for dropping by Jim. I haven't started with the foam yet but I will keep your suggestions in mind.

Won't be working with LA boat this weekend. Heading north to visit family.

Happy Thanksgiving to any CDN folks dropping by! Gobble, gobble!

:)

LA boat has two swivel seats - driver and passenger.

I have been thinking about building a simple rear bench seat and a some things come to mind.

I need access to the battery located starboard side and access to the gas tank port side. Both will be placed under the splashwell leaving space under the bench seat for storage and perhaps live well.

I searched for threads with bench seats but haven't found a simple design to follow.

Suggestions are welcome.

Yup - had a look at Wood's bench build thread. Thanks JB.

But I am looking to build a bench that has storage room underneath. And the battery and gas tank should be accessible from the front and tall enough to slide the gas tank below the bench under the splashwell.

Perhaps something like InMotion's bench built for the Jupiter.

Perhaps the center section would be used for a live well. Comments?

Perhaps something like this with a hinged top???

Yeah. I think that's the idea but the hinge will be for the center section only. Probably for a live well. I remember seeing this done. I'll have to look up some threads for ideas.

And I think the front and back pieces should have legs for added support. The legs wouldn't be too wide - I'd need room to move things in and out.

I think I have a place to store LA boat for the winter months. Good news is I'll be able to get at her and hopefully have things ready for spring ....

DARE I SAY IT ...

SPLASH.

:)

Have a good one folks!!

Those krazy kanuks will do anything for a laff... a bench seat in a fishing boat, really? Do you plan on snuggling up with a Salmon on the bench?

Just kiddin' ya J!;)

The beauty thing about building/restoring a boat is that you can make it any way you want and it'll be one of a kind!

You've done a seriously good job on La Boat and you can be very proud of her when you get her out on the water and other boaters heads turn.

Thanks for your kind comments Jig!

Had a late night with La Boat. Had more rivets to install for the splashwell. Really feeling solid now. Just need to cut back the corner pieces to allow for transom thickness and need to have two transom cap pieces made up. That should take care of transom.

Also cut the stern deck to size to fit around the knee braces and applied another epoxy coat.

Will likely lay some foam today to see how the pieces fit together.

Have a good one folks! :)
