Re: 1970's Evinrude 65hp question
Jay & F_R
I have been working on this motor for a couple weeks in the evening off/on. I found useful tests for ignition components. The rectifier is shorted. Timer base at lower end of limits. Stator & charge coils test very low (obviously leaking). If you recall in above posts I have low compression on the #2 cyl (60psi slight increase wet), 1 & 3 are 120 +,-. The thermostat was dead (boiling water test), poppets (2) stuck in slight corrosion, water cover good (no clogs) and gasket intact except for me removing gently, water side of cyl head looks good, removed head and gasket again old but no obvious breaks crack or signs of carboning or rust on the meatal sealing ring either side. now the but not a lot of carbon on the piston tops or on the fire side of the head on #1 & # now the but... check these pics of #3... (I can get more), what caused this "cleaning" & "pitting" of the comp chamber and my inexperience nearly matches the piston top.
Oh, I did caliper the cyl tops in 1/4's and all 3 are 2.992 to 2.997in. cyl clean and smooth except #2 which has a barely perseptable scratch maybe 2 at the 2oclock position. I'm thinking lean carb incombination with overheating and I think it was F-R that said the water jacket on the exhaust could spray water if warped (that's overheating correct?).
I was told by a local fella that any movement of the pistons in any direction other than a slight wrist pin "wiggle" is not a good sign (I detect no crank bearing movement in or out at various stages of piston cycle and barely perceptaable wiggle against the rings.
I hope I can save this oldie!!! (maybe just replace #2 piston) and regasket the exhaust if its not to far gone (or replace).
Thank You!!!!!
