1970's merc outboard reverse problem

Hi guys....when motor is in the water...how do I lock the motor in position so it doesn't kick back and vibrate in reverse..what position should the long bar be in underneath motor(sorry) don't know what its called...there's a bracket underneath motor..any information would be greatly appreciated ...thank you

You did not specify what motor, so advice will be aproximate. Normally Mercs had a spring loaded hook on the transom clamp that locked the motor down except for when in forward. It had a rod to a plastic cam in the gearcase, which controlled the height of the hook. Do you have any of this hardware?

its a 7.5 mercury electric starter outboard mid 70's...no hardware ...I see the hook on the transcom but its not spring loaded..probably broken..maybe go to the local hardware store to look for a long bar/pin/(something) or if you have any other suggestions I can use to try and lock down the motor...Thank you for your reply Chris

I'm assuming the long bar is the tilt adjust pin that sets the tilt on your merc. The hook goes over this pin and locks the outboard into place. You should have a shallow drive lever on the swivel section that you can flip up and down. It pulls a spring up and lifts up the shallow drive bracket. Also like Chris said, there is a rod that has a little ball on the end that fits into the hook and is kept there with the plastic clip/cam. Parts are still available for that model.
