1971 100hp evinrude no reverse

i put a 1971 evinrude 100hp electric shift on my boat. am useing type c lube. running with the muffs on she shifts into and out of all gears properly. when i put her in lake it would not go into reverse. at idle prop would spin in reverse but under power it wouldnt engage, but you could hear it trying to engage. no water in lower unit. would a bad shift solenoid do this? any help please.

Sounds to me that when the motor is in the water it might be shorting the reverse cable. Drop the lower unit and check the wire harness to the bottom unit for damage.

My push button mechanism went out a few years ago. If I pushed the forward button and held it down it would stay in forward otherwise it would kick back into neutral. Switched it to a toggle setup and good to go. But, in your case if it works on muffs might be something else.
