I picked up this boat in the spring after selling my '89 221 Islander Hard Top last year (I know...I question why myself sometimes). The price was right for the Offshore knowing the upholstery and floors where redone recently. I also knew that transom needed to be replaced soon.

I planned on changing the oil and running it easy this summer and replacing the transom this winter. What I didnt know was that the head gasket was blown between #2 and #3 cylinders and I have water in the oil (thought I checked it before I purchased, but obviously not) . So I pull the engine and removed the transom. Im glad I did! It was much worse than I had thought.

Purchased marine grade plywood and West Systems 105, 206 and 406 have been ordered.
Working on filling in some unwanted holes in the aluminum now. Attempted to fill with Alumaloy (as seen on TV) last night with negative results. I dont have a TIG so I may have to farm it out.

:welcome: back to the Starmada!

Looks like you've been busy already getting the rot out. You can use JB to fill those unwanted holes in the transom skin.

New transom has been done for weeks.

Discovered that the head gasket was probably not the issue. Found a 2.5" crack in exhaust manifold and assume it has other cracks that I can not see. Purchased new manifold. Waiting on head gasket, then engine will be buttoned up and ready to drop back in.

Still waiting on a guy to TIG weld unwanted holes in transom.

Finding it very time consuming removing multiple layers of paint off the hull. Paint stripper does not remove it as well as I would like.

Nice progress USMH! Offshore is an awesome hull. :thumb:

One word of caution on the welding...if they holes are anywhere near the seams, avoid welding. There's a gasket in there that can melt, contaminate the weld &/or lose the seam seal.

Fixed it for ya. :D

Welding on aluminum can weaken it. It may allow for additional cracks to form. Have read on the www where some have chased the cracks for a few years with a welder. Then they end up scrapping the hull.

Ok...maybe ill scratch the welding plan. The one hole is about 1.125", I doubt JB weld can fill this with out a plate. That is something I didn't want.

Its been really slow going on the Offshore. Way too many things going on, but I need it ready for spring.

I did manage to get the 120 buttoned up and hopefully ready to run.

Also filled 24 holes on the transom with JB Weld. Thank you for the tips. It really worked well. Transom painted and new wood installed.

Thank you. I can't believe how well the engine looks. It does appear that it wasn't winterized well at least once. I don't see any cracks but my fingers are crossed. Should have it in for a test run soon.

I'm ready to install the new engine mount but then remembered that the old one had two brackets on the lower side. Is there supposed to be a block here to support the center?

Just re-read a couple of my post. I'm really not as dumb as some of my misspelled words would have you believe.

Fat fingers and a iPhone sometimes don't mix well. I should proofread before posting. Lol

Looking at your pics this may be the third chance for that hull.

Nice work.
