I have a 1971 50 hp evinrude. Just bought it about 2 months or so ago. It starts right up and idles rough and when I go to get on it, it dies. Does it have points that I would need to change? You think I need to rebuilt the carbs? Any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

No points to adjust.
Since the engine is new to you, I would suggest that you do a compression test and check the spark with an air gap tester set to 7/16".
It could very well be time to over the carbs, but the spark and compression test will give you a base line on the condition of the engine.
What plugs are you running, are they in good shape?

I'll bet on the carbs and sync and link.
