Just wanted to get some quick feedback to see if this sound like it might be the problem.

1971 50hp #3241445 starts fine with a fair amount of throttle but will start to die when pulled back. A quick pump on the fuel bulb will keep it running. Does this sound like the fuel pump should be rebuilt? (not enough pressure @ low rpm's?)
Thanks in advance !

Kevin F.

It sounds like air is leaking into the fuel lines, or perhaps the fuel tank is not venting sufficently.

If there are no fuel leaks when pumping the bulb, it sounds like a pump or low float levels in the carbs

Thanks for the reply's. The fuel lines look good and I removed the cap from the tank with no luck. Clams, I just rebuilt both carbs, and I think I got the float levels correct(maybe). For $5.00 I'll throw a pump kit in it and see what happens. Boy, I sure don't want to have to pull those carbs again.... Thanks again

Kevin F.

Laddies, My apologies. I was browsing the board on some different subjects and read some postings from Clams and must have had that on the brain. I didn't mean to mis-identify you. Thanks to Laddies and Clams and all of the other posters that have saved me several years and fortunes.

Kevin

Re: 1971 50hp Merc Idle/Fuel Pump Problem

Update... Installed the new fuel pump rebuild kit with no difference. I have to keep the throttle @ 50% in order to keep the engine running. I've set the idle screws on both carbs per instructions on the rebuild kits to 3/4 turn backed off from seat. I've tried setting the idle screws open further with no results. Fuel lines look good and no venting problems on the tank. I'm sure that I set the float levels on the carbs pretty darn close if not exact. Any ideas? I came close to giving up and just hauling the boat down to the local dealer for service, until I called and was informed they will not work on any engines older than a 1985. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

Kevin F.

I had a similar problem with my 75 85hp and the newer needle and seat along with the exact adjustments around it and a new float had helped. It has to be measured just right on the parts around the seat and on the float settings also or it can throw your carbs off on fuel.
I set the carb idle on mine 1 1/2 and the idle stop was adjusted a tad too.
Good luck!
