I have a 1971 Johnson 60hp HydroElectric drive.
The motor has good compression on all cyl. Just cleaned carbs, they didnt look too bad, cleaned up well. Floots look good and are not sticking. Replace spark plugs, amplifier. Motor starts easily, but runs rough, seems to be flooding. Plugs are wet on all cyl. It seems to run well for a couple of minutes, then it bogs down, skips, has no power. The motor does not stall and restarts easily after it has been run. Has good Tell Tale. I have replaced all fuel lines and gas tank. Checked to make sure my oil/fuel mix is exactly right. Suspected choke problem, ran with it manually off once motor was warm, but had no effect. The engine will sounds like it is missing on one or more cyl. then smooth out for a second or two, then begin missing again. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: 1971 60hp HyrdroElectric Drive - No Power, wet plugs

Stringbox: Not sure as to the advice I can give you..But I have 2 of these engines in my garage now..Both donot have any spark to the plugs.Havent replaced the amplfier yet--not sure if that is the problem..I have purchased a SELOC repair manual for it..and have done some testing in the electical area of them. Nothing concrete yet. Anyway the manual covers many areas of fuel problems..heated gas boiling over the high speed nozzle into the manifold..suggest removing the plugs ..grounding the plug wires and crank the engine about 10 revs. clean the plugs and try it again. Also need to check the floatlevel and inlet needle valve..Sorry but thats all I can Offer for now..I have a post here also..on this motor. But not a lot of replies or helpful hints..Have a nice 4th...Chuck L.

Chuck L.
Mine did not have any spark in the beginning either.
That was the first problem. A new amplifier from
NAPA ($225.00) solved that problem. I have noticed several other posts about this amp, seems you must have a strong battery, 350+ amps, or it will burn out the amp. Manuals for this motor are available on the internet. I got mine from Amazon.com. Lots of people on ebay selling them as well. The manual has methods for testing the amp. I saw a post on this site about making your own tester with a 12v light bulb. Here is a link to that post.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=reply;f=17;t=014576

Re: 1971 60hp HyrdroElectric Drive - No Power, wet plugs

Thought I would follow up on what I found with my motor for any of you that are interested.
First I double checked my carbs to make sure the needle valves were not sticking and the floats were
adjusted correctly.
Next, I took a look at the points. Big pain in the butt getting the fly wheel off, but persistance paid off and I managed to get it off without doing damage to anything. The points were a little dirty but not bad. I cleaned them with some fine sand paper and set them both to .010. Not wanting to repeat the procedure, I double checked everything before reassembly.
Although it did sound a bit better after cleaning the points, I still had the same problem.
Next I checked the manual for setting the low speed idle on the carbs and there I believe I found the culprit. I adjusted them with the motor running with a water hose and muffs. Motor sounded great! Off to the River we went. Unfortunaly, the engine would idle great and I could run it up in neutral fine, but when I engaged forward and gave it throttle it died immediatly. I let the engine warm up a bit and then made a run for it. Had to be towed back to the landing.
A little more fiddleing with the idle adjustment and things improved dramatically. I still need to tweak it a bit, but basically, I bottomed out the adjustment screws on all three carbs, then opened them all up about 3/4 of a turn.
Motor ran out to about 5500 rpm and pushed my little 15 foot 1971 Caravel Bow rider about 40MPH with three adults on board.
Hope this helps someone, good luck.
