Engine starts but dies. I have rebuilt the carbs but the issue didnt change at all. When it starts everything sounds great but will only run for about 45 seconds or so. Every once in a while it will run just a slight bit longer. Cannot figure out the problem. I have checked the spark and compression but everything seems fine. I know the stator doesnt charge the battery but I dont think that would be the cause of it dieing like it does. Model number 60173 C, serial number J10997. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the timing is set perfect but if anyone has one or knows where I can get one then I could use another timing linkage for this engine.

Lastly, this is hydroelectric shift but the buttons were gone when I got the engine. It has been modified with toggle switches. I have acquired another control unit with the buttons but they dont work. Any ideas where I can get parts to rebuild the buttons?

Thanks
Robert

Connect your timing light to a lead and see if you lose spark when it dies. Those ignition amplifiers are a real pain! In your case, the charging circuit does affect spark. It's battery powered. Have a good ... make that GREAT battery and keep the connections bare-metal clean and wingnuts pliers tight.

If this helps, Green wire for Neutral, both Green and Blue for Reverse. Older Selectric shift switches don't work with HydroElectric models, but they look alike. Johnson and Evnirude controls are interchangable although they are completely different, as long as they're for HydroElectric shift.

Got plenty of fuel tank venting. I dont have a fuel tank at the moment so I just stuck one end of the hose in a gallon of 50:1 fuel and primed it up with the primer bulb. Fuel pump is working great. If I let the engine spin long enough it will pull the fuel up without the primer bulb.

I will check and see if it is loseing spark. I am assumeing if it is then I may need to change the amplifier. Hopefully I wont have to go that route, those things are pretty expensive.

Thanks
Robert

Checked the spark on all 3 cylinders. When it starts it dies but I am not loseing spark at all. I have even tried to adjust the timing but no progress.

Robert

if you still have spark, it sound like a fuel problem. when you rebuilt the carbs, did you soak it overnight, blow out with compressed air, and a carb rebuild kit. are you sure the float level is right. it sound like it's burning the fuel in the bowl.

soak what overnight? the carbs??

I have checked all I know of as far as the carbs go. I think my best option at the moment is to remove the carbs and just go over everything on them to be sure. Will post update when done and hopefully I will find the problem.

Robert

Correction, this is the electromatic version. Full electric shift. It is not hydroelectric as I originally thought.

Robert

I once had a similar problem. Check this just by chance... see if the air box that is mounted to the carbs is pinching the fuel lines behind it.
The way I found it was I waited till the engine died, then opened the drains on the carbs, and no gas came out. Hmmm, I said, lets trace back all those lines. Replaced the pinched one, zip tied it out of the way, problem solved.

Good luck keep us posted.

Re: 1971 60hp Triumph Evinrude

Airbox is off the engine right now. It is missing the cover for the airbox anyway so when I took it off to remove the carbs I just left it off for the time being until I can get another.

I did find what I think was my problem. I tried to start it again and when it started and then shut off it made a funny sound. I started it again and then found the sound. I dont know how it was starting to begin with because the flywheel was loose. I tightened the flywheel and it now runs almost great. I think I may have a slight timing problem or needle seting problem. Although, the main fuel line going to the center carb leaks a little so I think that may be a lot of my problem.

Anyway. the engine is running now,

Thanks everyone
Robert

if not mistaken fly wheel should be torqued to 105lbs. if not it may come loose again. yes, take carbs apart and soak the carbs, in carb cleaner.
