Ezmobee,

I was told by a marine shop that any bare spots get coated with Anti-fouling primer before they do a finish coat. I take it I was told wrong?

I'm sure there is some misunderstanding, self etching primer is first choice on bare aluminum. You may want to hit the lower unit with a standard grey primer OVER the self etch because the black will most likely "come through" changing the actual top color.

Yes. Self etching is what you want. Antifouling is bottom paint for slipped boats.

I was able to get this http://www.duplicolor.com/products/selfEtchingPrimer/ at Pep Boys for a reasonable price. You only really need a light dusting of the stuff.

Thanks Ezmobee. They were telling me it stops corrosion so they put a coat of anti-fouling paint on any bare spots before putting the finish on. So what they meant to say is self-etching primer.

I questioned them about painting over my anodes when they painted my OB and they said that isn't a problem. Now I've rethinking that it is a problem and I should pull them off and clean them up again and re-install them after I get all the paint off of them. Should anodes be bare to perform the best against electro-corrosion?

This is a trailered boat. Non of this stuff is necessary. (yeah, painting anodes is bad)

I was working on the boat yesterday and I noticed that there's oil seeping out from between the lower unit and the mid-section at the front when the motor is tilted up. Is there a seal gasket between the two or is it a O-ring inside that is leaking? I might be able to get some photos sometime today if it's not raining. I put the boat away last night, tied the tarp and dropped the engine down.

There is only one gasket/seal there and it's on the exhaust housing between middle and lower sections. By now (age) there probably isn't much left of it. You may be seeing unburned oil that normally goes down and out through the prop.

Yeah mine tends to make a mess of itself when tilted up. My '73 did the same.

Thanks guys. Rocky I'll check the exhaust gasket when I have it pulled apart. Guess I'll just put a pan under it to catch the stuff when it's parked with the motor up.
