Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking. Great site!. Anyway to the point. I just bought a 9.5 Jonhson, and have it running pretty sweet. But, I can't seem to get the steering damper to tighten up?. Is there a rubber bushing inside, that expands when you tighten?.

Thanx,Darrell

Re: 1971 9.5 Johnson, steering damper

if this engine has a tiller arm (like most 9.5s do)there is a screw that you have to tighten under the cowling with the engine centered?if this is the case there is a nut, spring, washer, and a leather looking flat washer that rides on the u shaped guide plate.i just went though mine last night it was missing afew parts and the steering was very lose.thank god for a parts engine.if you take the screw out you will see what i am talking about.you also must remove the guide plate to get the spring, washer and leather washer out.when you take the screw out you should have in order from top to bottom.screw, flat washer, leather flat washer, steering guide plate, another leather flat washer, flat washer, spring, and nut way at the bottom i did not take my nut out but i did clean and grease everything before i reasembled it.hope this helps you

Thanks for the info Wayne!. I have centered the motor and tried to tighten the set bolt. The problem is probably a alot to do with all the grease under there. But the bolt ,doesn't want to tighten or loosen  . It just spins around?.

if it does not tighten at all then eather the nut is gone or the bolt is stripped.

Wayne, there is no nut on the end of the steering damper bolt. The end of the bolt looks like a pin, sticking out about a 1/2 inch?.

u are right but the bolt is higher did you take it out ??? you have to take it out the bolt is up in the housing.there is a pin at the end of the bolt.the threads start about 1/2 inch up the bolt from the bottom its like a guide pin before the threads you will see what i mean when you get it all apart

Thanx again, I've got it figured!. The only problem is, the leather washers are missing. How thick are they?. I made some out of rubber, but I don't think the'll last long

well i am not sure if they are leather really but they look like it.they are about 1/4 thick and the same size and hole as the steel washers.u can usually get a few scrap peices of leather cheap from a local shoe maker/repair he might have somthing hard like a shoe bottom of some sort.i know it soulds crazy but its worth a try and will last longer then rubber

Re: 1971 9.5 Johnson, steering damper

I've worked on a lot of snowmobile's, but this is only my second outboard. There's some similarity but then there's not!.
Anyway's here's the other things I am not sure of.
1)Best spark plug type and gap?.
2)How much water should be pumping out, to determine if the impellor and pump, are operating properly?.
3)Online michrofishe, for exploded views?.
4)Used parts?. (I need throttle handle)
5)Planner boards(cavatation(sp?) plate has chunk out of it.

You asked for it. LOL

Re: 1971 9.5 Johnson, steering damper

Well I I've got the steering working perfect!. :D
I found a old leather belt hanging in the closet.
I put a hole saw in the drill press, just larger than the aluminum washers and cut them out.
The belt was 1/8 of an inch thick, so I put two of them in the hole under the bracket and one on top. It work's perfect now!!. Thanx for your suggestions.
Darrell
