I recently purchased a 1971 60HP Evenrude. A compression test with a very good tester showed about 150lbs. per cylinder. I was told that this is too high and that it may have stuck rings? I was always under the impression that the higher the reading the better? The motor sounds good , but it seems to idle a little too high, even after adjusting the idle screws? Is this a related problem? Thanks, dave

150 is the compression it probably had the day it left the plant - sounds good if all three are equal. I have a twin looper from 88 with 148/150. Are you sure there isnt fogging oil left in it ?? Did you take new reeding after is ran for while and warmed up ?

Compression too high? Surely you're kidding. No such thing as too high!

Hi,

I'd wager your tester is probably reading about 10% high... Are you running it on a hose? If so the idle is always high (no backpressure on the exhaust). Idle should be set with the motor in the water in gear. If you set it on the hose it'll often idle too low in the water and stall when put into gear.

Also are you sure you were adjusting the idle screws?? If you're inclined to do your own work, you should pick up a service manual for your motor...it'll pay for itself many times over.

good luck.
