I just got this motor and it was running fine till it overheated. Now my head gaskets are leaking. I am geussing that I should replace the water pump, thermostat, and head gaskets is there anything I am missing? I have tried to remove the lower unit but it won't come down. I have pulled the five bolts but it stll wont drop. And my last problem is that the motor will not go into reverse (this engine has the electric over hydraulic shifting any thoughts? thanks.

Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on what you're doing. I am guessing your driveshaft splines may be sticking in the powerhead. There is a two lead wire bundle leading to the lower unit that I assume you disconnected. While they're off, you might check the heads to see if the heat warped them (according to OMC manual, sheet of glass is flat enough to check them against).

The electrical part of the lower unit contains two solenoids. When there is no current to them, the LU is in forward. Current to one moves the unit to neutral, current to both moves it to reverse. To eliminate everything but the solenoids as sources of the problem, try activating them directly, using the connectors in the powerhead which lead to the LU. I have seen some opinions that these electric-shifting LUs want to run a particular type of lubricant (something like OMC Hi-Vis), rather than just generic LU lubricant. Don't know too much about that, maybe someone else will.

I have the head gasket and lower selonoid switch for the lower unit in stock, at 1/2 of the mfg. suggested list price. We closed our dealership and have many parts, props, literature and msc. for Johnson, Evinrude, Chrysler, Force and OMC stern drives. Email: linda@nu-z.net

I have a 1972 evinrude 125 After pulling the 5 bolts you have nothing holding the lower unit to the exhaust housing ( permanently anyways) except for the shift wires and previously mentioned drive shaft splines. Sometimes the exhaust housing gasket can hold onto the lower unit and make it appear as if it doesnt want to budge but i just gave mine light taps all the way around and it came right off. And the oil that was mentioned is "Type C" gear oil you can even buy it at autozone in the gear lube department ( they mostly have the normal marine lube) but i do find a few bottles of the type C electric shift hanging around. Regular "modern" lower unit gear lube will eventually destroy your unit so make sure you get the right stuff. You can also ohm out the solenoids they should read i believe 5 to 7 ohms each.
