I just bought a 71 Evinrude 18103S and noticed black oil coming from a small hole in the lower unit. The hole is a couple inches from the upper oil access plug. I have yet to get a service manual, but in the mean time, can anyone give me some insight of where the oil is coming from, and is this a problem? I have read threads that it is a drain and not a problem, but figured there are smart people out there who can help me.

Any reviews on the 71 Evinrude 18HP? Decent motor?

Great motor, pound for pound.

That is a drain hole. Simply unburnt fuel/oil mix along with some of the spent cooling water all pooled together in one black slop!

The drain hole keeps your lu from cracking in the winter to ensure there is no water left in the cavities.
