So I brought this bad boy back to life, it runs well but I want to know what I can do to tweak the engine a little bit to make it go any faster. The boat is just as old as the engine a 16.5 foot Carson seems pretty heavy. Any ideas on how to get more power? Change mix? Better Plugs? (Standard plugs in there now new last year) Change Props? Any ideas?

Hey Tommy, welcome to the forum and this funky internet stuff....

You got a good humpin engine when tweaked in right. These are the original loopers.

Let's look at the engine mounting. Where is the "anti-ventilation" plate compared with the keel of the boat? The vent plate is the "fin" right over the prop. A rule of thumb is "no more than an inch below or an inch above the keel of the boat. Usually, you can raise the engine a hole or two to get the mounting a little above the keel. The less lower unit you have in the water the less drag you have. Don't put it so though that you will lose water to the water pump. No more than an inch above the keel.

Now that's done, play with the tilt of the engine by moving the tilt pin into upper holes for best operational performance. The pin is located int the holes in the transom mounts. This is a try and try again deal.

A tach will give you a lot of info on what the engine is doing. I believe the operating range for you engine is between 5000 and 5500 rpm with around 5300rpm the optimum running rpm. You can also change prop pitches to reduce or increase rpm as needed. General rule here is, with every degree of pitch added or taken away, add or take away 150 to 200 rpm.

Get a service manual for the engine. OEM is the preferred manual for tuning.

Now if you are a real speed nut, soak about $500 into a after market trim and tilt unit. These act like a jack plate and TNT unit all in one. I think iboats store carries them. If not, check out Bass Pro.

One last thing.....don't carry so much beer in the boat. Lots a' drag there. :D :D

Hey Jim,
Interesting ideas about the engine mounting, I will definately check that out, anothe question though have you hear of Evinrudes new RAM oil....some other website was touting it as the latest and greatest....increase performance that kind of thing, just wondering. Also on the RPM gauge I have to figure out how to recconect it as well as the MPH gauge they someone broke off or got severed, as I said I resurected this baby from the dead. Now if I only new how to rebuild upholstry.

tommy
